Alright, tired of this ticking crap already! Let me run down my scenario's here and fill me in on which reason or where the sound would be coming from.. 1) I hear a subtle ticking while driving next to something, thinking it's the oil squirters? Maybe the Hemi tick? It's not a constant tick however, but it's frequent 2) Tick gets helluva lot louder when the AC is on.. and I really hear it from under the engine, doesn't seem like it would be exhaust related after installing the Corsa, since that connection is further away from directly under the engine. There is no smoke, car runs strong, no codes, etc. Any ideas? I'm not sure if this is something to be worried/concerned about or not.. and my only enthusiest MOVED AWAY!!! *mumbles* freakin 1bad4dr...
Well, only difference when the AC is on is a bit of extra load on the engine from the compressor. Does it get louder if you hold the brake and load the engine ever so slightly? Next I'd start listening around the compressor/pully/AC clutch area. "Call Ron over here. We need someone to crawl under the car and listen while it's running"
Just went out and tried it, heard the normal ticking, nothing abnormally loud. Engine was cold too. I've noticed it happens more after the engine is up to temp.
Oil squirters sound more like a whining sound, not a tick. The infamous Hemi Tick sounds like a faint rocker arm tick, and increase linearly with RPM. If it is more pronounced, it may be a sticking lifter, or maybe a rocker. If you can isolate the sound to one side or the other, remove the valve cover and check torque on rocker assembly hold down bolts. I think proper torque is 190 lbs/in, but double check my degrading memory.
How hard is that to do? If you've never done that before. Also, if that is what it is, can it do any damage?
I don't know your comfort level on wrenching, it's not difficult though. Need a deep 8mm socket with extensions and a swivel. Drivers side is easier side. It could be a lot of things, and could be nothing to worry about like your injectors clicking from normal operation...it's hard to diagnose a sound when you haven't heard it in person. Maybe do a vid.
I'll make one.. Side note: So I removed the 91 canned tune (non CAI) from the car and the noise has gone away pretty much. Any ideas? The gas I use is from Smiths or Philips 66 (Western Refining) and has been the same fuel I've used since I bought the car. Both use the same supplier for their fuel. I wonder if the tune touches timing and if the timing was off? IDK. I'm sorta upset since I bought the Diablo with so much excitement and had it for a few days, car was very different.. and now this. Would installing a 91 CAI canned tune, or going up to the 93 octane tunes do anything for me? (we only have 91 octane here).
This could be your issue... ABQ has 91 BUT because ABQ sits at a mile high, it changes the octane. 91 = 93 at ABQ elevation.
Well Ron, and everyone, I did the 93 tune and still heard it.. uninstalled the tune(s) and still hear it.. Here is the video as promised.. http://s97.photobucket.com/albums/l202/kaos85/?action=view¤t=16b54cd3.mp4 So, in the video.. I have the car at about 1k rpm's (using a stick), and the ac is on. This also happens but not as loud when driving and the ac is off. I can only hear it when I'm next to a wall or similar surface. Once I turn the AC off, I don't hear it as loud. As you'll see, it pretty much goes "away" when I turn the AC off. I'm not sure if it's the ac compressor (still blows out cold), valves (not tight?) or... pistons/relating to them..
Well.... one of the differences between the AC on and the AC off is that the clutch in the AC pulley is engaged or disengaged. Engaged you get more force/drag on the pulley and the bearing on the AC compressor shaft, etc. etc. Get a stethoscope (or a long screwdriver against your ear) and start listening around there maybe?
Yeah, I'll grab one from the shop tomorrow and listen to her. But do you think it should still happen (regarding if it's the AC) when the AC is off and I'm driving? Or hell, even in park revving it up holding it to a RPM? I mean, like I said, it's louder when the AC is on, but not as loud when it's off. Wonder if it's extra load on the engine/valves or something that is causing it? I really hope it's nothing that requires a tear down to fix
It's not that much load... If the clutch is bad or making noise or the pully is making noise or the shaft bearing is making noise that's what it would do. Probably make some noise and then make more noise with the clutch engaged and more load on the clutch/pulley/shaft whatever. In any event, that's the first place I'd look/listen. Then you can go from there.
When you turn the A/C on, the HS fan also comes on, check your fan blades, sounds like they are cracked and centrifugal force is causing it to hit the fan shroud. If not fixed, they will bind and cause fan motor failure and overheating. Bring it to dealer for a free fix.
Good thought there. but I wouldn't expect any noise with the ac off. Could be two different souces though.
Funny you mention it, but I got the recall done already middle of August, wonder if this is what's going on.. Hmm, I'll go check and report back in a few.
I thought you went back already? lol Are you going to Casa Chrysler or Melloy? You should be going to Melloy. Ask for Chris.
I'll call for Chris today @ Melloy. Yeah, I've been going to Casa, and no I haven't gone back lol. I was supposed to go back today but the asshat that I've been dealing with didn't go into work today.
good god, how many times must I tell you that Melloy is the place to go? lol Tell Chris he BETTER take care of you or I WILL come back and haunt him. haha
