I had the truck at the muffler shop Friday for some exhaust work..the installer told me I needed to see something....the Bassani headers were melting the wires connecting to my starter......the starter motor was so hot it burnt the installer's hand........I bought some alum heat sheild for starter motors at Auto Zone to cure the problem....

I dont know but I bet this may be a problem with other headers also..

yeah, a jet hot coating or heat wrapping will take care of the extra heat and wont melt wires.

i had an issue with the wire sheath on my alt wire melting on my tiburon after i boosted. the DP was only about inch away from the wires. i replaced the wires and put heat wrap on the DP. never had the issue again.

even the ceramic based paint that you bake will greatly reduce heat enough to where it wont melt wire sheaths and stuff.

    WRONG

PARTICALLY WRONG...as stated I did heat wrap after finding the problem..

    WRONG

    WRONG

Thanks Chris..not a major problem but if I hadnt found this I could have had starter problem later....

Wrong answers....mine are ceramic coated...and I am not the only one haveing this problem...seems maybe just a shorty header problem...another had the same problem with Gibson shortys...

Wrapping the starter should fix it...the shortys on these trucks are different issue than what the LX guys run into...normally the LX SRTs get long tubes since they already have shortys..

Even though the truck has a big engine compartment the short headers stick out far from the engine trying to wind up 5 tubes...the passeger side fender well is another problem..if you dont cut a section out they will melt...even withthe ceramic coating..

Does not make our answers WRONG Larry. lol

It could be that your ceramic coating is CHEAPLY done. Just like Chrome Plating, it can be cheaply done or done correctly... ;)

Didnt mean your answer was wrong wrong Ron...just wrong in this case...Yeah, may be a quality coating issue since not all had this problem...but it seems to not be isolated to Bassani as another with Gibson headers had melted wiring......But even with the highest quality coating I think if a header is too close to something that heat will melt it will melt...

Just yanking your chain MR CPA... lol

Yea. I will tell you, my LT's can be touched within minutes after turning the motor off.

I wonder if it is more of a heat exchange issue. I know how cramped the engine bay is, especially on the passanger side. Maybe remove the auxillary battery tray?

Still sucks though Larry. Glad you have a resolve..

Mine cool down quickly also... I can touch them within 10 minutes but those suckers are hot when it's running....may be an issue due to a fat A/R...as you know Ron these truck tend to be on the rich side..

what type of heat wrap was used and how was it installed?

if you use some autozone stuff, odds are its garbage..

and depending on how you install it, you wont get the full effect of the wrapping.

i used DEI wrapping and painted the piping first with ceramic based paint.. then i installed two layers following the instructions. (wetting it and over lapping it the whole way around. also wrapped it very tightly.) you could pretty much touch it after normal driving right after you shut the car off.

Forgot the brand but it was name brand quality...the shop installer said it was what he used..and it was not header wrap....this was alum backed insulation wrapped around the starter...better than wrapping the header..

I have no doubt it will Chris....Just one of those little things that come up when you change how a vehicle was designed....I really think this is a simple issue but wanted to make others aware...the headers have been installed for 7K+ miles and the wiring showed minor melting....just preventive maint..

I do the same...everytime my truck is on the lift I do an inspection...helps to be friends with the service mgr...I am with the tech as he services my truck and able to look under it myself...I quit changing oil myself when he told me to BMOO (bring my own oil) and they would change it for $7 labor plus disposal....
