I came to the conclusion after talking to Wade that the Predator in some way was affecting the driveline as a result of the tire size calibration being out of sync. I couldnt think of any other explanation for the jeep to drive smooth with a stock tune but vibrate with a predator tune?
My Jeep with the stock tune on the runflats, vibrated a ton after about 20000 miles. Same thing Wade is talking about. After I switched out to the Toyo's, the problem was solved. Just recently did I start getting some vibration again through the steering wheels at speeds above 65. I have about 50k on the beast now.
Okay well I'm back to square one and toally lost as what to do. Last night before leaving the gym I loaded an older version of one of Daves CMR tunes and went for a test run and the vibration was back, now on the way to the gym I was running my stock tune with no vibration but had been driving for a while so I thought maybe going back to an old CMR tune that was programmed with an older version CROM was not working with the newest CROM that I had on the Diablo and was messing with the transfer case so I pull over take the CMR tune off and go back to stock and Walah vibration gone. I get up this morning (still on stock tune) and guess what, Freakin vibration is back again-DAMNIT!!!! BUT this time going down my street I could feel a slight bump in the front tires like when your in a boat going over wakes so just maybe its the tire being out of round??? Is there anyway to check for out of round tires I hear you can put it up on a lift and run it up to 20mph and watch for it???? Also does warming up the tires make it go away if there is an imperfection in the tire??? This really sucks and I'm regretting even doing the tire swap now
DO IT!! i coulda told you it wasnt the tune cuz i just started having identical symptoms as you and i dont have a predator. it started when i got my new tires put on, gotta be something balance related IMHO.
Yea, it's tires. Slight vibrations at speed will be ballancing but real bad vibs like you and Wade are talking about are almost always out of round tires or rims. And ballancing them on even the most high tech machine won't fix it. I used to work for a tire place years ago, both in sales and in the shop, I've had to deal with this kinda stuff first hand.
im yet to check if i have a bent wheel. if thats the case then id say its pretty funny how it didnt get bent till i drove it home from the tire place:what: Wade, have you checked your wheels yet to see if their bent?
Usually this kind of situation is very easy to spot when the wheel is on the ballancing machine being spun up. Any idiot can see if there's a high and low spot as the wheel spins, it should have been seen by your guys tire shops when they mounted up the tires. There is the possibility that yea, you did hit a pot hole or curb or something that bent a rim but you'd know that right away and I don't believe much in coincidences. Go back to your tire shop and yell!! :argue: You know I think your situations might be amplified by the fact that you got 20" wheels. That's a huge tire and if it's out of round it's gonna make a huge vibration.
ill have you know im not just any idiot, im a really retarded one! as fun as that would be, theyd weasel their way out of liability. good point, never thought of it like that!
That is what the Hunter 9700 does. It will tell you if your tires are out of round and to what degree. I would bet that very few tires are perfectly round. The road force balancer will tell you how far out of round and whether they are outside of tolerance (and should be returned to the mfg.). If the guy doing the balancing is not explaining exactly what he is seeing with your wheels/tires then I am not sure you have found the right guy to be balancing your tires. He can show you pictures on the screen that are pretty self-explanatory that show both out of round (up and down) and shimmy (side to side) specs before he balances them. Then he balances them and runs them on the machine again and you can see the corrections he made. He can even provide you with printouts of before and after.
That is exactly what the guy at the second tire shop I went to told me. He said that 20" and bigger wheels are a little more difficult to balance. The first shop I went to was in a rural town, they had a road force balancer but the operator probably just wasn't that good at using it. Also, they do not see many 20" wheels. When I went to the second shop and told the guy what my problem was and that the wheels were already road force balanced, he initially said that he probably would not be able to help me but he would try. As soon as he put the first wheel on the machine and before he even tried to balance it, he assured me that he could fix my problem and he did.
You know I think a lot of times the prob is the guy working the machine doesn't ... well, know what the hell he's doing. Granted it's been a long time and equiptement has changed a lot since I was ballancing tires but some things are still the same ... an out of round tire is an out of round tire and you can actually see it. I also used to see a lot of out of round tires brand new, straight from the manufacturer. Nowadays that's changed but still some come that way for whatever reason (tollerances being off, shipping and storage, etc.). I'm counting myself lucky since I have no problems. When I bought my maggie it had RSAs on it and I told the dealer I would only buy it from them if they put F1s on. They didn't have any there so they sent me to the local Goodyear shop and they put a set on without any problems. Not a word actually. I didn't watch or wonder about them having probs with 20" tires at the time but come next set I'm def gonna be concerned!
well I'm going to Pontiac tomorrow and thanks to DanRealtor at GSM in giving me the heads up on these http://www.imiproducts.com/xact/index.aspx not only do they have these kind of weights they also have a Hunter balancer. I spoke with the Service Manager who is personally going to to the balancing on these since I was referred to him by his XACT distributor, cross your fingers guys/gals.
Thanks I'm about done for the day and gonna play with different PSI on the tires to see what that does I'm a glutent for punishment, really appreciate all of your suggestions.
I was thinking about this more last night (don't know why, lol) but there is one wild card in your situation that I didn't take into account ... the awd system. I don't have exp with those and vibration probs so take my earlier 2 cents for what it's worth ... bout 1 cent, lol!
What is really blowing my mind right now is that it has not been consistant the longer I drive the smoother it gets almost like they need to warm up or the sidewall is too stiff????
