Insulin Pumps that is... My first pump lasted twelve years before I replaced it with a newer pump. Probably would still work if I plugged in a battery and had any spare tubing/reservoirs left that would fit. The newer pump, well, its two months out of warranty (got it four years ago) and one of the buttons, one of the important buttons has ceased to function. So here I am, 4:30 in the morning, waiting on my doctor to get in the office so he can either get me a loaner pump or a scrip for some syringes and insulin to cover me for the next 36 hours until the replacement pump from the pump manufacturer comes. The pump that's supposed to get me thru the 90 day period it will take to get an upgrade pump. Woohoo... Maybe I should just start getting the things in pairs....only problem with that, they run between four and six THOUSAND dollars a pop. Fortunately my insurance covers these, just a matter of how exorbitant my deductible will be...$500? $2000? Hmm... And yes, for the uninitiated, I'm a juvenile diabetic, have been for 26 and a half years...and this is just a nice little reminder that if modern civilization were to come to a screeching halt...I'd be dead in about forty eight hours.
Finally got ahold of the doctor at 10 am. Marc had to drive me and Maddy over to the office in the Charger. Got my emergency supplies and took an injection right there in the office then Marc shuttled us home. Gotta say, the Zoomers seem MUCH louder in the backseat. No wonder everyone falls asleep back there. Anyway, should be receiving the loaner pump via UPS in the morning. In the meantime I'm taking injections every four hours to keep my blood sugar reasonable. After sixteen years of not taking shots, I gotta say the needles have gotten tinier, but the psychology of sticking myself is that much tougher. To think I used to give myself shots all the time in grade school!!
Modern science has saved many a person....more than likely you will see a permant cure for your diabeties in the near future....genetics..
They dont make anything like they used to Tam.... Fingers crossed you can stop sticking yourself with bad bad needles ASAP!
I've been hearing that for twenty-six years or so. I'm just trying to stay as healthy as possible to maximize my longevity/quality of life while I've got it. Compared to how it was when I was diagnosed, this is cake. Even though it sucks. Nothing like twenty-four hours of shots to make you appreciate the "bionic pancreas".
Alright, got the loaner pump and got it "installed" so I'm in the clear. Now to return the crapped out pump and wait for the paperwork processing necessary to get the upgrade pump. Whee...
