I was talking with my friend Darren today, remember the good ol' days when I had all of my HDD's working and could view pictures I'd taken in the past......*sigh*...... He said he'd kept all of the pics I'd sent him from our meeting a while back in Niagara Falls (he lives in Toronto). He and his lovely wife met Rachel and I at the Skylon Tower. It's a mini version of the CN Tower in Toronto, with a rotating restaurant on top (FANTASTIC food, BTW). We were driving the SRT-10; Darren and his wife in the Smart. It was my first chance to see a Smart in person, and I have to tell ya- they're cool little cars. Up to 50 mph, they're amazingly safe (past that it drops off like Jessica Simpson's SAT score after the test's "NAME" section). If we were living in a crowded city again, I'd probably own one. There are guys on the Smart forum that have scored 90+ mpg! I took Darren for a parking lot run in the truck and he did the same for me in the Smart. Even at 6'1", I still had PLENTY of headroom in the Smart. The good news is that Darren remained dry after a quick burst/brake in the parking lot (I only hit about 80). Darren and I have a good natured rivalry going with our vehicles, and it was fun to get them together. Here are some shots: Spike & Chester "You Talkin' To Me?!!?" Some specs to get your giggle on: - The SRT-10 has TEN TIMES the displacement of the Smart (8.3L vs. 0.8L). - The front brake rotors on the SRT-10 are the same size as the wheels on the Smart (15"/381mm) - Yes- the Smart will fit in the bed of the SRT-10. One of these days we'll mount it in there and I'll do a flat-out run. That way Darren can say his Smart has been 150+ mph. - Both vehicles were made by the same company- DaimlerChrylser!
As far as gas milage goes....you couldn't get any further apart in that category.LOL Hell, you could probably get a couple of guys and lift that damn Smart car into the bed of your truck!
ok gotta have some fun with this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f5S1NAMnYKM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MDU5BU_qSJU&NR=1
i see them everyday now in the city and on my street. they are like beetles used to be in the late 90s where everyone and their mother drove one. i pulled up to a black on black one yesterday, i almost talked to the driver, though i had just peeled (accidentally) out at the last light and didnt want to embarrass him nor myself.
first off...HOLY CRAP that thing smoked a horsie hahahaha and im STILL laughing at the smart monster truck thing.... if they get 90mpg....im going to go buy one tomorrow hahahaha
I have been wanting a Smart car since I saw them when I was in Europe back in 2003. I love them. I have never been in one but I still like them.
Yeah, but that's not really a Smart. Check out the interior shots; everything save for the drivers seat has been removed to fit the Hayabusa engine/transmission in there. It'd be fun at the track, but worthless as a daily driver. Slow down there, bucko. The TDI versions ***CAN*** get 90 mpg. That was done with some VERY careful driving and shifting in central Canada. The TDI versions are ***NOT*** coming to the U.S. The U.S. models are regular gas, and only get about 45 mpg.
Yeah, Sheryl, and 5 star rated for head on drivers-side impact at 70 mph! Go figure... Side impact...I dunno, probably serious "ouch"
Actually.... The IIHS doesn't test at 70 mph. I think what you're referring to is this video from the BBC show, "5th Gear": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ju6t-yyoU8s Pay close attention to the last 45 seconds of the video and what the girl says. The Smart did quite well with the REAL tests from the IIHS- Frontal Offset (40 mph) and Side Impact (31 mph): http://www.iihs.org/ratings/rating.aspx?id=936 "Good" rating for the occupants body parts, and "Acceptable" for the safety cage. In Europe, it failed the "Elk Through The Windshield" test miserably. The good news is that where the Smart will flourish- the big city- there aren't many elk on the streets. The bottom line is that the Smart is NOT designed for highway use. It's a commuter car for the inner city. Keep it under 50 mph, and you've got a nice safe ride that gets great MPG.
Actually, You're right, that was the vid I remember seeing ages ago, Kevin. I guess it would probably fare better in urban testing for the "homeless person thru the windshield" trials as well
hahaha yeah i knew that there's no way a smart car could run that way.... cause if htey could we would all probably have one hahahahaha and yeah thats hte same as the VW's that get like 70mpg that are the TDI's or whatever VW calls them....its too bad they cant sell them here just cause they are some diesel (i think thats it right?) i did see that it runs 45mpg...i was a little dissapointed...i figured something like that would be better on gas....what does it weigh like 50lbs? hahaha we still need the peel P 50!!!!
