I had rat problems at my last place. I had the traps down in the right spot, but the little bastards were wise to what a trap was and were first going around them, then hopping over them. The worst part was they were stealing the bait and even licking the god damn peanut butter off the trap.

So I figured I was smarter than a damn rat and to keep them from hopping over I stuck a line of traps 6 wide and two deep.

They had problem solving skills but geometry and ballistics weren't among them. 'bout a year later different rats, same solution.

Oh and if you have laid out rat traps, in like this big Grid of Death, remember to take them down before you let your pet parrot walk around in the area.
