the only problem that i have with this thread is the blind shit talking about something in with he has no idea how it works. he has been bitter from the start because he was getting one then decided not to get one then changed his mind but could not get back on the program. he has talked shit about it since day one and needs to shut up about. f'n hater.
1) dont we already know? 2) a full SC kit install? including meth and sensors? instead of just slapping a SC into a stock motor? 3) too many people have had catastrophic failures for this point to be ignored. 4) very interesting point and i would like one of the more knowledgeable people to weigh in. 5) LOL im thinking this point will be by passed. 6) i think its obvious that you can no longer take you car into a speedee oil change for tuneups and oil changes anymore. you no longer have a stock motor, you need to change up your service routine by asking a shit load of questions at the time of install and most important, have them answered by people you TRUST. 7) see this point is why i will NEVER go to a manufacturer for an install. they dont give a shit (in most cases) on what happens to you after you leave their shop. i go to a tuner/installer that i trust and that has a good running record in a community. i have been through a few in the LS1/LT1 world and i can tell you for sure one thing, your installer is as close to a brother as you can get in the car world. please explain this to me. if ryan had never installed the SC, how could his engine have suffered? install of the blower was the culprit as far as my memory serves me. i dont want to get personal or start an argument, i would only like to know the facts. i think everyone is pissed. i personally look at jason like a little brother, he doesnt have experience in the performance car world and he took his pride and joy and let someone install something that destroyed it. now, it seems like his "friends" are slowly turning their back on him in his most desperate time of need. they arent going after a vender/installer that didnt take the time or stress the fact that engine reliability is a primary concern when FI is introduced. now that is fucking retarded ralph. your better than that, slow your roll.
Well you asked what popped Ryans motor and Adam nailed it. He drove it while it was overheating. He didnt know cause the water wasnt flowing passed the sensor so its not really his fault. This has happened to people without a blower. As far as anyone turning their back on him that is just uncalled for and at this point ridiculous since Ralph drove down there to help him on his own time and for no charge. I know personally I spoke with Jason and Ryan at length about meth and that I would do the install for them for free. SO for you to say we as a group turned our backs to them is utter bull shit. They disappeared from the boards and never called me to ask for any help until it was to late. Unfortunately for Jason and Ryan they were never asked by voretch are you guys car guys and really told that this isnt just install and forget it. Should they have been? Sure but the rest of us told them that. They chose to not listen. I think this thread has turned into Rick bashing and talking shit again about something he wasnt fully informed on and others blaming Vortech. Could it have been solely Vortechs fault sure...was it...maybe. More likely it was a combination of things. Jason mentioned that it wasnt missing when he took it into the dealership...What no one has even mentioned was could the techs have seen the kit and been like " hell yeah lets go see what she can do" not knowing that Vortechs tune a bit of an issue at part throttle and higher boost... IMHO I think it was a combination of a coolant leak that could have vapor locked the after cooler, a thrill seeking tech driving a car he shouldnt have been, and not monitoring a few simple things. I really hope that Rick and Jason both read this and realize that even after all this if they needed help that we would help them being as close as we are. I am just so shocked that after all the talks we have had that it became a shit talking storm again. I mean come on. John
thanks for the info john, i hope you realize that i wasnt stating that you guys were turning your backs on him, only that there doesnt seem to be that resounding call to make this an issue with vortech. they should have taken the necessary precautions with this install, even more so being that it is an R&D unit.
Ummm, no. Unless there's info that hasn't been posted. Sure it looks like maybe heat caused the ring/top land to fail. Let's say it did. How do you know that the dealer didn't leave a cap in a coolant hose? or put a check valve in backwards or something like that? I'm just sayin that I don't think we know the root cause for sure at this point. I have the impression that it may not be necessary until you go over 5 or 6 lbs. And you're sort of making it sound like that would have avoided this particular failure. IF the coolant system failed then it wouldn't have. The IAT sensor is already there? Depends doesn't it? All the ones I've heard of had a different root cause (same symptoms). I think we're all behind Jason (haha, NO, not that way). I'm really bummed out for him. and you're jumping to conclusions again? I'm sure (from every similar incident that's happend before) that there's a lot going on behind the scenes to help him out. And I don't think Jason went into this *completely* blind. There's dozens of threads and maybe hundreds of posts (even though it happened really fast) on Momo's decision to get blown. Huge discussions on the warranty alone so I don't think he was totally unaware of the risk. ...and again... we don't know the root cause yet.
ryans motor broke a belt tension and the water pump stoped turning and althrough he did get it stopped before melt down the motor showed signs of being over heated (i was there when the motor was pulled apart) but it does not take long to get hot once the pump slows down. the motor let go right after the tensioner was replaced. the pistons cracked where the rings gap is.
how many have blown up? do you know how many they have sold? i have not had any problem with mine and i was the first one to get the 8lb kit and i sure beat the hell out of mine trying to brake it. and yes, i am still on the vortech tune.
Wow, MOMO is surely on the forums again! FIRST AND FOREMOST, please stop the in-fighting, people. I know ALL of you are looking out for my best interests. Some are pointing the finger at Vortech, some at me, some at other crap. Your all trying to point to one thing or another as the cause... when none of us knows whether or not for 100% certain EXACTLY what caused my engine to take a shit. Did it have SOMETHING to do with the blower? I'm almost certain. Was it Vortech's fault (a flaw in their design/tune)? I don't know. Did I neglect my car? Not that I'm aware of. Are there things that could have prevented this? Probably but nothing Vortech told me about. The issue is, is that what's done is done and I need all of you TOGETHER to help me, if you can, in what ever way possible... even if its just jokingly busting my balls. Please don't bash one another. Rick is my biggest supporter and friend and knows I didn't neglectfully fuck myself over. Ralph, John and Adam are the techies and know the mechanics. Don't beat on one another over what one knows and the other doesn't. We've been here before, many times. We get fired up and TYPE shit that isn't taken right or is inappropriate. So, lets just stop it, please. I feel like I'm a substitute teacher to a 2nd grade class! SIT DOWN AND SHUT UP YOU LITTLE SHITS! LMAO!!!! Now, trying to strain what I can remember, here are my responses: 1. Informed. Vortech did not tell me I needed ANYTHING else other than what they provided. John, Adam and Ralph had suggested some things I could do (meth, gauges) to either cool and/or monitor the car better, mainly for better performance. Seeing how I don't have a ton of disposable income, I chose to stick with what Vortech provided, as it was described as safe (read: good to go, just change the blower oil, etc.). 2. Coolant. My Vortech cooler was only dripping (read: SLOW drip) when I got it home after a 1-1.5 mile drive from when I realized my undercarriage plastic shielding was fucked up. There were NO previous puddles in the garage... and the NEXT day when the dealer told me to come look at the cooler with the fascia off, it was STILL leaking. So, the car had enough coolant in it to prevent overheating when I drove it the 1-1.5 miles back home. The car was FLATBED towed to the dealer from my house. I noticed the backfiring on the return trip after the car had been repaired. 3. Forum Advice. There were tons of discussion on here about everything blower related. So much so that a layman such as I can not recall it all. Did someone post/relate to me that I ABSOLUTELY, POSITIVELY NEEDED other things to prevent engine failure? NO. PERIOD. If that was the case, then I WOULD have gotten those items or dropped out of the R&D deal if the price was too steep for the accessories. Bottom line is this: the car is screwed. The one material treasure I had is fucked up... for years, I preached about this car and now mine is fucking trashed. I don't have the $$$ to just do whatever to the car and relied upon Vortech to get me straight with this one time big purchase. Like I said, who's at fault? I don't know. But the situation is what it is and I have a 4200 lb paperweight sitting in my garage. Do I wish I had the time to be on the forums like I used to be, to monitor new things, problems, to BS with you all, to go to car shows and meets, etc? Sure. I love this place and our little LX world. I'm a fucking legend damit! lol. But a child and a job that works me weekends, late nights, etc. influences what's a priority. Believe me, a kid changes EVERYTHING. So don't fault me for that because material items and things related to it will lose 100% of the time to my son. I'd kill the whole lot of you bitches for him if need be! LOL, kind of! LMAO! I was lead to one guy who MAY want to buy the blower. If that's the case, then I'd likely sell it... just to eliminate any future, possible problems. Right now, I will be calling Vortech on Monday and emailing them a pic of the damaged spark plug.
i would expect the same from you. the term brown noiser is no different the the term hater. you have been telling everyone on the boards that a vortech supercharger is the biggest waste of money you can spend for a mod since day one and if that is your opinion fine. but do not state that as any kind of fact. i for one am tired of you bad mouthing a product in which i have spent time working with the manufacture to improve. i find that degrading to me and my car, and i take that personal. i are not judging him, i am trying to help him and i think some other are trying to inform him. i have seen the motor first hand when it is taken apart looking at the cause and affect and can tell anyone how ask what i have seen.
jason, i completely agree that if they knew there was a problem they should have informed you. but how are they going to know there is a problem until they are told about it. and that is the job of the r&d cars, to find out these problems and report back to them. in this case we are the product testers, that's why we got them at such a great price. i personal feel bad about your motor, and will do anything i can to help you. and i am sorry that i got heated about ricks comments. all i am trying to do is give my insight on what happens, and on your motor we will not know anything real until it is taken apart.
Jason, Whatever the cause, I hope that Vortech's service company gets everything sorted out and gets your car taken care of. If not, in a couple of weeks I may just have an extra6.1 sitting around...
That's why I've said I cant be certain what happened... we'll see what they say on Monday! Cross your fingers! Adam, thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But the question begs.... WTF are you putting in its place?!?! Rick, I've never doubted your intentions. You've been the reasonable word of caution, IMO. I personally never had a issue with that. Some may read into it differently, but we've talked a lot and I know what you think pal. Folks, don't sweat Rick. He's as standup as it gets. No BS with my BFF.
OK, this is getting OLD fast. Can we maintain the course of what actually caused the failure to Jason's motor and come to a remedy once the prognosis is concluded? Thank you.
Jason, I hope you get things figured out, and if there was a problem do to the tune/system Vortech takes care of you. I think Adam's comments have been good and I think his analysis may be correct. As far as what you 'need' to run the base Vortech system...you do not need anything other than what you had. However things like gauges, water/meth etc are nice to have and extra saftey measures. I don't understand all the Vortech bashing going on though...at this point no one knows the cause or how Vortech will handle things. Just an FYI for those that may not know....my daily driver SRT8 has 52,000 miles on it, and now has 13k plus with the Vortech on it...I have not done a thing to change the standard kit...no custom tune, no water meth, heck we never even got around to installing gauges...customer cars come first lol. I drive this car every day in S. Florida heat, and also take it to the track. ANy time you run F/I on ANY car you know you run teh risk of issues, that goes for alot of mods we all do. I am by no means trying to be a Vortech cheerlader because we are a dealer, as most of you know we don't sugarcoat things when they don't go as planned...like the Challenger blew up while running a Techco, we posted a complete synopsis... Anyway, I hope everything gets worked out Jason, and I am sorry to hear about it.
Kris, you are running the 5 - 6lb pulley, correct? Jason switched to the 8lb pulley with Vortech tune to go with it. As I whole heartily agree with Adam's opinion, but I still believe that the 8psi was also to blame. JMO.
Yes 5-6 lb as mine was one of the first kits...however Vortech has since switched to the 8 lb pulley in all kits after the R&D guys went through.
