...with the 426's, strokers, etc... are most of your builds CARB legal, if not, how do you plan on passing smog... if at all? Thanks.
I'll worry about it in 5 years. Otherwise the way I planned it was to reinstall the stock cam, headers, cats and tune.......or sell it. .
That's a great question Drew. Not so much how they're going to pass but the details... It's been 3 years now so people are going to have to start going. Oh, heh, it's 5 years? I guess we'll worry about it then. 1) CARB legal I'm thinking not. I think if you modify anything that might effect emissions you have to get it approved by CARB. VERY expensive. Not doable for an engine build. 2) Practical Don't know how picky the guys are at the gas station or at the emissions only stations. They do have to keep their license but it might be a matter of what they're required to check and look at. I'm sure that's explicitly spelled out in the state issued test procedure. So... if you go in there with 426 how would they know? and are they required to look? engine serial no? what? or is it just a matter of passing emissions and no OBDII codes and OBDII showing everything in the ready state. ...It might be easier to pass the smog check with a 426 than having a CAI on a stock motor? Anybody taken their blower through a smog check?
Hell, go and have one tested and see. I would think if there are no codes being thrown that it would pass. How are the testers going to know if it is a 426?
well if we can get the carb numder that we where promissed it won't be a big deal. lol if not, remove-smog-reinstall.
Hope we can get it within the next two years! Spoke with them about it and they are still working on it.
I hear ya brother... that's why I having to not go with the pillar gauge mount and hide them from sight.
I understand that, but what I am saying is, "go and have a 426 car tested for shits and giggles (you know, months and months before emissions is needed). Yea, it will cost 20 - 30 bucks, but at least you will get an idea of what needs to be done, right?
^ IDK...it's been awhile since I had to smog test a car in CA, but if you were to wander in to a shop to get it tested, and it failed, wouldn't it then get flagged in the computer system as a gross polluter. Making them want to pay "special attention" to it when you do need to get it smogged?
I'm not sure, but I don't think it works that way. You go in, you pay, and you get the inspection. If you fail then they tell you why and nothing happens. Some places have a retest-until-you-pass for the initial fee. I think it's only when you pass that they dial up to the DMV and enter your certificate number as passed.
I know a good traffic lawyer up here in the bayarea that can help you get this taken care of when the time comes.
