When Frank Racing swapped my 3,000 mile stock intake manifold with their ported unit, they mentioned that my stocker was coated with oil inside. Oil mist from the PCV system was making its way inside the intake and contaminating the air/fuel mixture. When oil is present, this will reduce the knock resistance of your fuel and will make your vehicle prone to pull timing because of knock retard. I just got finished installing the Billet Technology brand catch can. The installation was simple, but the performance results were surprising. I have not gotten any knock retard when logging with my Predator since the installation of the catch can. It must be doing its job! Now, I might be able to creep timing up a little and gain some more power. It's been sitting between 17-20 degrees and I'd like it to be a little higher. Can't wait to start tweaking it again on the dyno and the track.
At launch, my timing is 17 degrees, then it climbs to 20 degrees, then drops to 19 degrees at peak torque, then climbs to 20 degrees at peak power. Any more timing than this and the motor would consistently pull timing from KR. Now with the catch can installed, I may be able to increase the timing throughout the rpm ranges.
