Driving along and low and behold I see 2 NYPD SRT8's parked, I just had to pull over and take pics.

The LEO was a very nice guy and when I pulled over he was just smiling at me looking at my Charger. He told me he drives a Toyota Corolla at home :bigwink:

If there was a mystery there is the 6.1L engine in these puppy's and its worked.

    Enjoy.

Is it just the 6.1 motor? It doesn't look like those steel wheels would clear the front calipers. Maybe just the SRT drivetrain with police suspension/brakes? Just curious. I'm glad to see that NYPD cops get to have some fun too.

Wow. That is bad ass. I can't believe its an SRT8. We have 2 LX vehicles, but they're not SRT8s.

Now, I gotta get the Matchbox/Hotwheels version of the NYPD car for my kids Charger collection (got him a '67 & '69 yesterday at Target). The '69 is a more expensive edition and is still in the package... the '67 was like $2 and he's already chewed on it.

lmao Nope. I talked with Tony right after we hung up this morning. Tony stated that the cops go through brake pads like a bar of butter in the Louisiana heat...

It appears that they got the police package and then upgraded to the 6.1 drivetrain only.

nothing on that car looks to be SRT! no front or rear clips, no brakes, etc....maybe the dealer just threw the srt suspension on it and badged it an srt8?

did you get the chance to actually look at the engine?

Doesn't look like an SRT-8...did you get to see the engine? I wouldn't put it past the police, to just slap an SRT-8 badge on a regular Charger. Kinda try to make the general public believe they got the goods, even if they really don't...

Without any pics of the engine compartment I call bullshit.

There's no way in hell that NYPD would spend that type of $$$ on a patrol car let alone mod one.

Looks like a six banger to me.

If you believe what the cop told you then I have a bridge for sale that you might be interested in.

I think that there are couple of SRT8 Police cars running around in Atlanta. I swear that I have seen both Charger and Magnum that are SRT8 cars. The exhausts on both look just like the stock SRT8 pipes and there are no Brembos just like the NYPD cars. I wanted to pull over to inquire one day but they had a car stopped. Nest time I get a chance, I am going to inquire because I swear that they have the 6.1 drivetrain in 'em. On the NYPD cars, years ago when I lived there, they would take certain cars that were confiscated for street racing and make them into police cars. There was a very famous example of one seriously modded Fox Body Mustang GT that was on the cover of Muscle Mustangs and Fast Fords back then that was confiscated, converted and used to go after street racers. It was even painted NYPD white and blue just like the Chargers shown..

I don't believe it!! You might and I say might have a small department or a STATE Police highway patrol that might and I say might be willing to buy SRT8's and use them. But you will never find a large city department that will pay for SRT8's period!. As far and confiscated cars some Narc would be driving it to pay a role undercover. The only Police unit I ever remember upgrading there cars was the Fla State police in 95 the bought Impala SS and used them for highway patrol. And you might have found Police Chiefs buying them as there department car. When I see a marked police car with the hood open showing me a 6.1 motor I will believe it. As far the the brakes think about this is dodge could have used the "police brakes" on the SRT they would have instead of spending the money they do on bembos. And if we had problems with the first brakes they put on the SRT what do you think would happen to the "police Brakes" on a 6.1. come on guys focus I know we all would like to see a 6.1 police car but come one.

I'd think there are a whole bunch of ways a PD might end up with a couple of SRT8s. Expecially if they're a large department and have gone with Chargers.

    1) Dodge just might include a couple as a PR/good will gesture.
    2) They might have ordered a couple for evaluation, department awards, whatever. Get the cop of the month, precinct of the month, get the SRT8 for the month (or does that only happen on TV)
    3) They might have purchased a couple as part of those PD PR programs to take to shows and show the kids kind of thing. Confiscated cars don't come with warrantys, etc.

Is any of that a remote possibility?

wow you guys have no idea lol. i have a few friends that are nypd...here's what's going on..........

highway departments are getting the 6.1L hemis. ALL of them. that's highway 1, 2 and 3. plus special units will have them as well.

regular squads will have the 6 cyl versions. they've been testing the chargers in all precincts over the last year or so. each house got one to basically beat the crap out of and try to break, and see how they like it. everyone loves the cars. so nypd will be upgrading (over time of course) to these cars. as the older cars die these will be replacing them, so it will be a VERY long time before we see a whole city full of chargers.

local towns around here also are all going with the 6-cyl, they're basically everywhere.

not sure why you guys think it's such a big deal. maybe up where you guys are they don't do that kind of stuff, but down here we have plenty of fast cars and bikes that cops need to catch up to so seeing built cars as police cruisers isn't unexpected. there are a few camaro ss state troopers down here, new rochelle has a fully built camaro with nitrous and everything. they use it a lot for promotions (it's their DARE car - it's a confiscated drug dealers car that they turned into a cruiser), but it does patrol duty as well. most of the larger towns have at least one 8cyl to catch people with.

That's my idiotic ass on the right, and the second Camaro I had...and yes, I drove it year around, and in some of the worst blizzards I have ever seen.
The WHP did it more for a PR thing than anything else.
