Cindy and I decided to head over to SoCal this weekend. Tired of driving the Honda Pilot, so we opted to drive Cindy's Mustang. Hadn't taken it on a trip since the 3.73's had been installed at the dealership. Stopped and got gas after about 250 miles because I needed to pit myself. Was getting almost 20 mpg running 75 to 85 with a few spirited passes. A little after getting back on road a few miles I started hearing a noise that sounded kind of like a loud electric fuel pump. It proceeded to change pitch and get louder, and louder, and louder. Of course we're in the middle of no where on I-10. I finally decided it was coming from the differential. The noise got so loud, Cindy was ready to scream, kick my ass, or jump out of the car, yeah, that loud. I kept driving, as I figured the damage was done, I didn't want to stop for fear of the rear locking up, seemed to drive OK, just noisy as hell. We then developed a metallic noise, which ended up being the right side cat-back coming loose and dropping. We were on our way to Cam's, was going to stay in Riverside tonight, and head out to my mother in laws in Sun City in the morning. Found out, Cindy's brother, and sister were going to drive up from San Diego to spend the day with us. I have an 10:30am appointment Monday in San Diego with a new account, and we where going to drive home on Tuesday. Well, we limp into Cam's, he's hard at it as usual. He moves 2 cars, including one on the rack to put Cindy's Mustang up. He fixes the cat-back, checks the fluid in the diff, and finds it full. The drain plug is covered with black burnt gunk. Not a good sign for less the 2K on new gears. We proceed down the street to Duke's for steaks and drinks. While driving there, which is only about a mile from his shop, the differential is even worse. Cam thought at 1st I could get it flushed and refilled and make it home. I have him go for a ride with me for about 100 feet, he says, "back it up and park it". Cam was on the phone texting, which he hates to do. lining up a couple of places that can fix Cindy's Mustang Sunday or Monday. As I've stated before. Cam is my hero.
That fing SUCKS. On a bright note, Dukes has the BEST Rib Eye I have sank my teeth into. And yea, Cam is the BEST!!!
Tough trip, but it seems like you were visiting the right people!!! Hope it gets sorted, like, yesterday. Fredrikopcorn:
wow hal....... sometimes it seems if you did not have bad luck, you would have none at all! lol definately good to know you are in good hands with cam........ his hands are always gentle....just ask scott.
What's even worse. The 3.73's were put in under a warranty replacement. So I can't take it to a dealer for a fix. Can't put 3.73's as a warranty fix, even though the stock gears were needed to be replaced. So I have to pay 100%. Our steaks were not very good Ron. They where rib eye's, but tasted like a bad breakfast steak at Denny's. We had ordered prime rib, which they only have on Saturday Sunday, but they didn't yesterday. We ordered baked potatoes, they had none. Cam did say the steaks were much better when you were there. And the streak continues.
Maybe the picture in your avatar is bad luck??..LOL....Cam seems to be a great guy!!...You are lucky to be close to him..
Warranty part sucks, dinner sucks, well, I´ll have to go with Legmaker and quote Wesley Snipes, "If there wasn´t for bad luck, I´d have no luck at all..." Chin up though, Cam will probably fix it and then smoke your tires on the test run, thats what I´m doing at the moment... Fredrik:whistle:
Yup, Hals luck is non existant. :sorry: And to make matters worse, I asked a friend of mine that has the parts to repair him to PLEASE call him on sunday and make arrangements. I just now found out that didn't happen. Sorry you two, that was disappointing. And ya, dinner sucked. And Kyle, the 300 is still dead in my shop.
Sure man, ya wanna come on by and we'll whip that disaster right out??. The electrical fire took out some of the other nods in the system. One of them being the FCM (at least that what it looks like right now). So I need to replace every piece with ones that have matching vin numbers to double check the wiring is up to stuff. After I know the wiring is A OK, then we can trouble shooting each nod. Now all I need is a starscan to do that. And it gets better, I just got a call back from the shop. they can get him fixed today. But Hal is not answering his phone. And I've been on hold with the hotel for 15 minutes waiting to ring their room.
Wow Cam, i didn't realize it had that much damage...And dude, if I was anywhere near you, you know I'de be more than happy to turn a wrench with you...it would be an honor.
Car left for the shop at 10:10am. Said they could have it done today. Sorry for having the phone off Cam. It wasn't off, Cindy turned the sound off last night. I can't figure out how to turn off email notifications and leave text and phone on. We are next to train tracks and I'm a fairly light sleeper, so was woke up about 6 to 8 times. I'm usually up by 5:30 or 6:00, but not this morning.
Ugggh I hate reading this and yes Cam is the shiznit he helped out a bud of mine this weekend over the phone (thanks Ron for the #)
Just got a call. Pinion bearing was making all of the noise. Ring & pinion look OK. They are going to look at the clutches next. Also found out they are 3.55's not 3.73's, and the tech left a bearing laying in the bottom of the housing. Lucky it didn't get into the gears. Cross your fingers, maybe it won't be to bad.
