Hi Guys, My name is Korion, I'm pretty new to the forums. I've noticed that there are quite a few vetrans on the forums, so I figured that this would be a great place to have a few of my questions answered. To give you a brief background on myself, I am currently a student-athlete at the University of Arizona where I am pursuing dual degrees in Business Economics and International Studies. I will be finishing up my athletic eligibility and graduating in May of 2011. For as long as I can remember, I have wanted to serve my country in some capacity. My question is, have any of you went through OCS, and if so, through what branch? I am hoping to gain some insight into the experiences of vetrans, whether or not it was worth it, etc. Thanks for the help, and most of all, Thank you for your service!!!! :usflag:
Trust me someone will be along shortly we have tons of vets and active military members. Congrats on your career path seems like your civilian dedication may pay off in a military career.
Korion, I was a AFROTC grad, and been on active duty for 20 yrs...will be promoted to Lt Colonel this summer...feel free to shoot me a PM and I will answer some questions...
First off, good on ya for wanting to serve your country. I'll say it's not for everyone, but like everything else in life, it's what you make it. OCS will definitely be a positive when it comes to the finance area. Pros and Cons for both sides. Sound like you are on the right track. Just don't make any harsh decisions without checking into it first. GET EVERYTHING IN WRITING!!! Talk to people that have been there and got the T-Shirt. Unless they are trying to prove something, they'll usually be up front with you and honest. 23 years USN, retired. Wouldn't change it for anything.
Most of the vets on here are enlisted.....and we all have different views on the officers. I'm jus' sayin' Good on you for finishing school and going to OCS though....
Easy Jeff...not all O's are hostile (LOL)...seriously, spent 5 years enlisted before I jumped over through ROTC to the darkside...definitely pos/negs for both...
My experience is enlisted, so I can't comment as far as being an officer goes...however, on the enlisted side, the Air Force seems to have the edge as far as standard of living goes. My career training, was done on a Navy base, and we trained with Army and Navy troops. One thing I can tell you for certain, compared to the Army and Navy, the Air Force living standards were A LOT nicer. And that was still being on a Navy base...Large wings with 4 bunks per section, separated by partitions, with shared gang showers at the end. If my training was on an A.F. base it would have been two people dorm rooms, with a bathroom. I've met and talked to few people from the Navy, and the general consensus that I got from those conversations, was being an officer is the BEST way to go there. Apparently there is a rather large difference in the standard of living on a ship, between enlisted and officer. As for the Army, Marines or Coast Guard...I have no idea...haven't really met or talked to anyone from those branches. For the record, you are on the right path...Being an officer is definitely the right place to start. Good luck with your decision. :salut:
my best friend, former ATL had just finished OCS in Dec. we both had done 2 tours in Iraq and myself and his family were happy to see him take that bigger step up in his military career.
 I never said ALL O's.....but there are a few. Besides...you are automatically put in the 'kinda cool' file for being prior enlisted....
Jeff... Can not believe a squid would bring up the chair-force joke...dam...LOL Actually, being an SF officer pulls me out from behind the desk while defenders are standing post, patroling streets of Afghanistan/Baghdad...hoorah! Sometimes the rest of my service, it can be viewed that way!
