Look FRIST! I think some of you should pull your 4 bolts on your throttle bodies and take a real LOOK IN SIDE with a flashlight! To see witch one of your catch cans are really working and post what you see for yourself. There should be NO OIL in there at ALL, take a look for yourself and start a post to compare each others! Donald
You guys have so much knowledge that you guys need to be on the SRT team and share all this information with the designers to get a move improved system. I am truly glad I am here learning all this information first hand. I was wondering why it looked darker then the rest and it was just broken down in la-mens terms where I fully understood all of this. Thanks guys, Jay
Four months and 3000 miles later, time for another oil change. Looks like the catch can collected almost 100ml of blow by. Now I know these aren't comparable...but I came across this video on youtube and look at how much blow by is coming out of this Ford Powerstroke diesel. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xP9UTR_I0dk Eric
Thanks for saving the oil and measuring! I've only collected about 70 ml so far and I seem to be catching about 10 ml every 500 miles. Looks like you're catching about 15 ml for the same. I was interested in getting some sort of averages so we'd know what's "normal" for our motors and also see if different catch cans compared. I'm guessing all the quality catch cans should be just about the same as far as effectiveness.
i have taken my throttle body off several times and have found a lot of oil on the back and i have a catch can installed. what gives??
That's likely coming from the CAI. You have that tube from the right side of the engine, basically on the oil filler tube, going to the intake. My understanding is that the engine is pumping air from the manifold out the exhaust creating a vacuum in the manifold. That vacuum is used to suck air through the pcv system (from the crankcase). The tube on the oil filler side is the air inlet to the pcv system. There are cases when this can "burp". Like when snapping open the throttle the manifold vacuum drops suddenly and I think you can get a sort of reverse pressure wave? or if you get oil in that tube when filling oil, etc. So if you were to get some oil coming in the CAI tube that would get on the TB. The air/oil vapor from the pcv valve enters the manifold behind the TB. So even without a catch can you still might not see that oil on the TB but you would see it in the manifold. that's my guess. Then again, your catch can might not work. Those ones that are basically just an empty can don't do much of anything.
DO NOT put the oil/fluid from the catch can back into the engine. Put it in the oil recycle jug, or measure it for future informational use. With the Viper engine, I've noticed that the fluid coming out of the catch can is not really oil at all. I'm not sure of it's exact make-up, but it's consistency is slightly thicker than water and mostly a dark yellow. I could use more colorful terms to describe it, but I think you get the idea. I empty mine about once a month. Warmer/more humid weather = more often. On average, there's slightly less than 1 fl. oz. (I really wish someone made a bigger one.....*sigh*)
As does McKinney Raceworks. But any of the quality catch cans should be equally effective for our purposes. Then there's mounting solutions ...and... BLING! What you don't want is one of those empty cans from eBay like the one with the fluid level glass on the outside or those clear (or not) bowl filters from Orchard supply (look sort of like the old style fuel filters).
I think it's dependant somewhat on driving habits too. That first batch of collected oil in this post had several trips to the 1/4 mile track on it. This round only had one track trip and lots fo slow winter driving on it fwiw... Eric
I agree, I was reading about this recently. So Dave if that is where he's getting oil in his manifold from what can be done about it?? Anything, or is that just the way it is??
Another 3,400 miles, another ~70ml in my BT catch can. This batch of oil was 0W-40 and I went drag racing about five times. I filled up with 5W40 turbo diesel Mobil 1 this time. We'll see how that does. Eric
I did this oil change at 3000 miles, just because the super cold air is moving in. Ugh that week in Florida three weeks ago seems like last year! Well...I guess it was. 80 ml to the catch can gods. I think I went drag racing four times on this batch. There were several tire-shredding WOTS when I felt necessary - almost daily actually Eric
That would be right on average Eric. About 10 ml per 500 miles. You being in 100% humidity, me being in 0% humidity and catching about the same implies that not much of it is condensation.
