If I were the owner of the vette, I would keep my mouth shut and not put up anything else and get an attorney immediately. Start building the case and work toward resolution. I don't see where the auto place has a prayer. I suspect they were almost friends and he had done alot of work for him in the past. May explain why he felt comfortable enough in allowing an employee to drive the car.
Does not justify the liberty he took but may explain a few things.

In any event, I would be upset to say the least. Could have been worse. The driver could have been killed in the crash. He'll get a new vette and restitution.
