I know this thread is old but it brings up the topic of boost leaks and I don't like starting up new threads all the time... We did a boost leak test on my friends SRT-4. It was leaking bad from the valve cover gasket.... In the right front middle side. He had a oil leak before from the valve cover because the gasket had folded a bit. He reinstalled it again, reused the gasket, used the black rtv where you are supposed to and torqued it down correctly. No more oil leaks. But now he has air coming out of there. ITs pretty bad. You think a new gasket would fix the boost leak problem? Or is this a sign of something else thats going bad...
There's only 6 points your suppose to use RTV on. If the gasket was folded a bit/pinched/etc I wouldn't have reused it or used it. Get a brand new valve cover gasket set, put RTV on the 6 points like was done from factory. Torque it down evenly. Let it sit for an hr or so till the RTV starts to heal. Start it up. Check for leaks. Stay away from Napa valve cover gasket set (they don't fit right). See if another Auto Parts store carries one or just pick a set from the dealership. Me personally would get one from the dealership. FYI, you can reuse the valve cover gasket as long as its not damaged or stretched. I've reused mine about 2 times already.
Talk about boost leaks!!!...!! Forgot to update... He put a brand new Felpro valve cover gasket in there. PRetty blue I might ad. We did a boost leak test a week after it had been on. No leak out of the valve cover gasket.... Now it was leaking out of the intake mani!!!. So he bought a new gasket for that and the old gasket was brittle as hell and broke when he took it off. Put the new gasket on... Test. Now its leaking out of the damn PCV valve. He just had a zip-tie on the end of it. He is not running a catch can and checkvalve. We went to the auto store and bought some small hose clamps and 2 feet of 3/8'' fuel line. Slapped that on there. Did another test. It was gurgling a tiny bit out of there but not that bad. Filled it up and it was coming out of one of his vac lines he had rerouted going to his EBC I believe. Rerouted the lines again and got that fixed. Filled it up with air again and felt air coming out of his lower pressure pipe. Tightened his oval t-bolt clamp no more air coming out... He hit it again. And I felt it coming out of his other t-bolt on the lower pressure pipe that attaches to the flat piece under the oil pan. Tightened that down, no more leaks under there. Checked the upper pressure pipes, nothing Filled her up again and felt air coming out of his block off plate a tiny bit. Got the soapy water out and sure enough bubbles emerged fromt he drivers side.. He told me he never used any sort of gasket when he put it on. No RTV, nothing... So I got out my trusty ratcheting 10mm and went at that hard to reach 10mm bolt. IT came off real easily and fell to the ground. Get the magnet and pick it up underneath the car... "Oh shit.... Uh dude, bad news" "What" "Bolt broke" Sure enough the bolt had broke inside and there were no threads exposed to grab onto to unwind it out. But AJ had his thinking cap on and got screw driver bit and told me to find the place wher eit broke off and try unscrewing it. After many failed attempts, it finally cut loose and started unscrewing! Got some threads exposed and got it out with my fingers! woo hooo. He even had a similar bolt laying around except it was only a grade 5. We still used it anyways. Same head and pitch. He didn't have any copper rtv, but he did have the red rtv. So he slapped a nice thin layer on it, let it try for a bit and we slapped it on there and finger tightened it down. LEt it sit for around 30 minutes then tightened it all the way down. Did a boost leak test and it was still leaking a tiny bit from there. Not as bad though. So he slobbed some of the RTV on the side where it was leaking. lol. We went from not being able to hold any boost, to 8,10,13 and 15lbs. So even if you boost gauge says you are running 18lbs of boost, that doesn't mean shit. lol
General rule of thumb: Never re-use any gasket (if it was re-usable it wouldn't be a gasket). and, holy crap! sounds like the guy had his entire car put together with bailing wire and duct tape.
wow.. thats amazing. talk about a lot of boost leaks.. when i get my silicone charge pipes, i am going to do a leak test. i assume i will have a few of them, just based on how the boost holds and such.
^ Love your sig man, thats a great shot. Do you have a full size pict of it? The funny thing is, he never has done a test on his car since he owned it brand new. I think my car is due for one. The last two I didn;t have any leaks.
