Is there an overide to get the auto shifter out of park so we can get the car towed? It's sitting in my garage. I had no previous tranny issues prior to this AM when I could not get car out of park... Thanks for any help.
Ok...did search seems its the mechanical cable...so I take out the small storage bin and hit the bypass button...then car will move out of park?
Probably not the instructions your looking for but this is the fix to your issue that dave put together.... http://srtconnection.com/forums/showthread.php?t=16862&highlight=park+lock
I found it! I found it! (haha, my only intelligent contribution ever) http://srtconnection.com/forums/showthread.php?t=14837&highlight=shift+lockout The override in the cubby hole is for the electrical part (no battery). You probably have the mechanical part failure. You should be able to get it out of park by removing the trim piece around the shifter and prodding the cable with a small screwdriver.
thanks for info...I have not had car towed yet....I was going to ask the tow folks vs messing around with it myself...its sitting in our garage...I'm told about 300 to repair...where does one order the non-plastic part
In the vendors section you can find billet technology....they sell the metal piece that you want and a easy replace even for someone only mildly technically inclined lol
thanks...so you think even a guy like me can do this repair??? I'm a bit worried about tearing into the shifter console!!!
The write up dave did is very detailed and he did a very good job making it easy for almost anyone who can handle a screwdriver in any way to get it done. I will say if you really are not comfortable though, you cant go wrong by having a pro (or just someone you may know who is fairly technical) do it for you.
I removed the pink thingy and didn't replace the part. Now I can shift from park without doing the dumb brake pedal dance.
Just fixed mine today. It broke at 103,000 miles. I've had that part sitting on my desk for about a year waiting for this to break and last night it finally did. Thankfully it was in my driveway. I found that I really didn't have to remove the center console and instead removed the trim around the large shifter opening and was able to reach the 2 electrical connectors just fine before removing the assembly. I took me less than 2 hours to fix and I took my time.
More great info...I hope this problem has been addressed by the manufacturer in the 2012 Charger...if not, then I hope there's a billet part for the 2012.
From everything I've seen and heard about the new SRTs, they fixed or obliterated anything us 1st gen owners had to complain about. So you shouldn't have any of these to worry about. On top of that, there's a HUGE community (here and elsewhere) that are all over these issues when they come up.
All new cars have little (sometimes big) issues that come up over time...IMO Chrysler did a good job taking care of issues with the LXs....from the trans leaks on the early cars to replacing the brake rotors with slotted ones on the 06 models......the getting stuck in park issue was fixed by the 2008 models....
