This is really focused on the Jeep as I feel that the LX SRT8's react different to mods than the Jeep does. What I am trying to do (sorry vendors) is see what mods are really good for the Jeep performance wise and what mods, well really dont do much or even hinder the performance. Now this comment is only based off observation as I do not have first hand knowledge of catbacks on the Jeep, but it does seem that the ones running the Borla, Corsa, etc... catback setup are not realling gaining much and in some cases possibly running slower!!!! Is it TOO free flowing and whats all this talk about backpressure the HEMI needs, if so was the stock exhaust given alot of thought and engineering that they nailed it right from the factory as I have heard some complain with cutouts and catbacks that the Jeep feels sluggish off the line???? Thoughts pleaselease:
I know what you mean Wade, it seems like some back pressure would be good. This is why I think Since I have headers now Im going to keep the stock cat back and just repplace the muffler with a free flowing magnaflow. Much cheaper and for the 5 hp you get from a cat back it seems like a new muffler will do the job for 800 bucks less
After an install of a catback system (this holds true for the LX's as well), the PCM must relearn the airflow. This is why it would feel sluggish. Yes, there is not much, if any, gains to be had from a catback (again, the same for the LX's). However, there are many hidden bonuses to be had from a well made catback. 1) weight reduction. Around 20+ lbs. 2) better airflow (especially when you get into more poweradding mods. i.e., cam, heads, F/I). The gains may not be there intitially, but the will come. And never look at the top end gains, look throughout the power gains. Did the SRT Engineers do a great job on the exhaust? Absolutely. But everyone seems to forget that ALL Auto manufacturers have to build these whips within E.P.A. standards and specs. Hope that helps. And if I made a wrong statement, or did not add enough, PLEASE feel free to correct me.
Honestly if a catback is all your doing a 2.5" or 2.75" pipe with mandrel bends will be more than plenty. You will lose bottom end with a larger pipe and minimal restriction. If you are planning mild heads and cam then the 2.75 will probably still be plenty.....if you go stroker, power adder then I would have to say it is well worth the 3" pipe on the cat back.
That is what im thinking. I would rather save a couple hundred bucks and just get a magnaflow x pipe free flow muffler. Im guessing you will probably pick up the same couple of hp's as you would with a $1000 cat back and still be sounding real good. What is the stock cat back pipe size?
Put the B&B on over two years ago now so I really don't remember if it made any power difference but it made a huge sound difference. Every major mod (heads/cam/headers/B&G tune/N20) have added more power and dropped ET's, so I hope the catback made those mods even better. Now if I could just find a CMR tune that did not require a 9 hour one-way drive I'd be done with go-fast mods.
Check out BWoody. I deleted my Magnaflow catback and went with theirs. WOOT! Here is my write-up with vids on their exhaust. http://www.srtconnection.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5604 Keep in mind though that I have LT Headers, 9.5:1 compression, P&P Heads and Intake, and a blower that has its own exhaust note. BWOODY's is a TRUE 3" exhaust. I know that the LX pipe is 2 3/4" Not sure on the WK?
