Do the pads have the "brick red" break-in surface on the pads? If so, it'll take 300-500 miles to use them up, and maybe then the pads will quiet down. My EBC pads had the red break-in surface on them, and though I never had a squealing noise (it was more like grinding), the EBC web site made it very clear that this coating was installed on their pads to help "mate" the surface of the pads to the rotor. I've had the EBC 7000 series on my front brakes for the last 5 months, and its totally "squeal" free. Pieter
Yes, the pads have the red break-in surface. I have about 200 mile on the new pads. The noise is so lound it will be hard to make it to the 1000+ miles the EBC site recommends.
It may be helpful to re-bed the pads once the red break-in surface is gone. Out of curiosity, did you re-install the shims from the stock pads? I did, and used copper paste as well. I don't know if the shims helped or not, but clearly, I've not had any issues with brake noise. Personally, I'd "abuse" the brake pads for the next few weeks, wear off the red surface material, and then re-bed the pads.
I have used the EBC Reds on my SRT8 for some time. I have heard that some people have had issues with noise while others like myself never have heard a peep. I love my pads and they not only dust less they held up great on the track. I cant explain why you are having the squeal but I would suggest re beding them and letting them get through the Break-In coating. I have over 10k miles on my rear pads and have had no issues.
Thanks for all of the advice. I did not have shims on my factory pads but did have the copper paste. The EBC's have shims, and copper paste. I will give them a few more hundred aggressive miles before give up. I have yet to hear form EBC or Bwoody on the matter, which I am a little surprised. BTW the red break in surface is long gone on the EBC's....The noise is so loud my kids and wife will not ride with me, when I pull up to a stop light people roll down their window ask me if their is something wrong with my brakes. IT IS EMBARRASSING.
I am going through the same thing with Satisfied Pro-Ceramics. I may switch to Satisfied RS6 pads which were delayed thanks to Satisfied closing for half of December. I have heard they squeak as well. I used brake grease on all metal to metal contact points and backing paste on the pads. Still it squeals...
What was the outcome of this? I'm struggling with it right now and wondering if it's worth waiting it out. It's funny because I switched FROM the Satisfied Pro Ceramics to the EBC Yellows and I never had a noise with the Satisfieds... Dave
I hate to tell you THEY ALL WILL SQUEEL I have tried the Centrics and they squeeled, now have the GS6 pads they squeel, I think the key is finding a good shim that will not burn up and stay in place
I just got the Hawk Pads from R1, and they have not made a peep....No dust and no noise at all. Still breaking them in though. At first it was pretty hard to stop, but it is getting better. I'm just glad I have no squeaking....
I've had EBC Reds with R1 D/S rotors for 8K miles now. For the first 1K miles or so the EBC's were scary loud and I would not drive thru town, only on back roads. I abused them merciously becasue I wanted them to fail so I could send them back. I did not install the shims and was about to give up and try something else and they just stopped squealing. Now probably 1 out of 10 times I'm out I get a squeal from the rear at the 20-0 mph area but I've learned how to make it stop with different brake pressure. The EBC's are excellent for stopping and there is virtually no brake dust but making it thru the "break-in" period was not fun. I will probably try Satisfied's next time but these have a lot of life left.
I went back to stock pads in the rear with a plastic/rubber shim. I could not get the EBC's to stop making a very loud noise. I tried the red and yellows shims, no shims they both made so much noise people would point and ask you at red light if you have a brake problem. it was bad..
I have the EBC pads and GSM rotors and they squeeked like a mofo for a long time they still do squeek but its not as bad as during the break in period
I love my EBC Reds...never had any issues with noise on my car though, great pads for street and track. Wonder why the Jeep guys are having issues? Not sure if you guys are aware, but Hawk now makes a pad for our car/trucks, so that is another option. http://www.bmcspeedshop.com/product_p/hwk-hb563f-656.htm
Question for those whio have swapped pads... did you turn the rotors as well??? or just swap pads??? How did you break in the pads?? I have the EBC pads and after break in they worked real well and I have not had any issues.. I did have the rotors turned as well.. This was a little bit of a pain as you need to find a shop that can work with slotted rotors.. I have not had any other vendors pads other than the factory originals.. Here is a link to the Zeckhausen site and their recommendations on how to properly bed in your brakes which has worked for me.. http://www.zeckhausen.com/bedding_in_brakes.htm
Just a FYI... For track days I always put my stock rotors and some form of stock pads on the jeep becasue it is just a solid reliable setup that I trust. So a couple of weeks ago I did this and on Tue of this week put my EBC Reds and R1 D/S rotors back on after the track day but this time I put the stock shims on with the EBC's. Well, knock on wood but after 3 days of around town and a couple of fun runs there is NO SQUEALING at all. I mean zero, can't believe it and actually trying to make it happen as slow speeds. My stockers never squealed once. I'm the first to admit there are so many variances but I hope I have finally found my solution for my setup. Might be worth a try for some of you guys.
