I'm so sorry to hear about this accident, but it's not the first, and it won't be the last. Two weeks ago my wife and I bought our son a '07 Chevy Cobalt SS for his 17Th Birthday. Jared (my son) wanted a Cobalt SS S/C, and we said NO. I figured with the extra 35 HP the S/C has, he'd kill himself. 1 week ago he came home at midnight with a speeding ticket of 63 MPH in a 45 MPH zone. I am now driving Jared to school every day, and will continue so for the rest of the year, if not longer. We have to protect our kids the Best we can.
very good move...most parents dont seem to care and would even probably pay the ticket...keep the kids safe!
I hate to read storys like this. It's a real tragic thing to happen at such a young age. About a 1 year out here in IL near Chicagoland area, there was a girl driving a SRT-4 about 80mph during the winter time and lost control of the car and hit a huge rock and then the car went flying into a tree and split the car in half. The driver and the passenger were injuryed badly and the 2, 16-18 years old in the backseat were killed.
I survived my teen years because I couldn't afford anything faster than my Firebird. I'm sure my parents would have stopped me from buying anything faster even if I had the money. Hell, word got back to my dad I was asking about a new cam and I got a lecture that I wouldn't be doing anything to my engine until I got out of college. Even though I bought my car with my own money it sat in the driveway and I rode the bus whenever the rumor hotline caught up to me. Parents need to be parents, not their kids best friend all the time. Its a lot of work and I salute those that do it..:salut:
In the Australian state of Victoria, where I spent most of my teenage years, Probationary drivers (18-21 yrs) are not allowed to drive high performance vehicles. Admittedly, this is a total nanny state in what I consider an increasingly personal-rights intrusive country, but maybe a law similar to this (but not so draconian, maybe 16-19 yrs) is worth considering.
EXACTLY bro, that's our most important job as a parent. Right on the money bro, well said. My first car was a 1980 VW Rabbit with all of 75 horse but I STILL got into many a "situation" in it. Luckily no accidents or worse. If it had had another 50+ horse though things would have been quite different. My car after that when I was 20 was an 85 Mustang GT w/210 horse and to this day I still don't know how I didn't wreck it or kill anybody. No, my two kids first car (they're gonna share) is going to be our old 89 Acura Legend sedan, I'm keeping it just for them. 150 horse, air bags and antilock brakes, they'll be safe in it (as safe as they can be out there).
the driver, is a 17-year old kid with a junior license (he shouldn't have been driving the car at all under NYC law at that time of night). What's worse, the junior license was suspended. Parents please wake up!!!
The 1st I heard of this was when one of my buds on lxforums gave me a call the morning it happened and asks if everything is ok. I said yeah, why you ask that. He said on the news he saw a black charger srt8 totalled and thought it was my girlfriend's car. I said NO WAY man. But I guess since the accident happened about 6 miles from my house guys started questioning not even paying attention to who was in the accident just at the car. The worst part of it is when I took a drive the following day and saw a piece of his bumper near the accident site...:rip:
a parent who is trying to be their kids buddy and not a parent... and they have to learn the hard way that they are doing their child more harm then good...
