Well after my whole 426 implosion this summer I decided to change spark plugs just to make sure I didn't have some pre-ignition issue I wasn't aware of. As many times as I had my plugs out I couldn't remember what was in there...turns out I had stock heat range NGKs in there ever since DCXDepot (for PPP) did my install. Typical of that shop. Each plug looked pretty much the same, and I didn't see any signs of plug damage so I am guessing I was ok. I put in NGK Iridium 5107s (exact copy of stock plug but 2 steps colder) Does this plug look ok? It has 8k miles on it. NGK R LZTR5A-13
looks ernge, from combustion of octane booster of some type? When my stock heads were removed a while back, the combustion chambers and plugs looked a lot like that. I quit the booster and haven't pulled a plug with that on it since. Over time, I don't guess that build up helps the plug fire.
LOL...I was on another forum when it hit me....I came back to correct the name but too late...sorry Jon..
Yup, I used to use booster as well. Same thing. hahaha Hey Hector, King Savage is Jon, SRTLUVR is Chase... lol
Sorry 'bout that. Orange - nice chart posted, btw. Question would be do you add any octane booster or maybe fuel injection cleaner? That distinctive color residue is usually indicative of octane booster. For the 8k you've had the engine, if you've run it, that would be the cause of the color. Some say over time that it could have a negative effect on the plug firing. That's all I've got.
LOL...no worries Rastus...errrr, I mean Larry. ;-) I didn't see anything odd or wrong with the plugs that came out but just wanted to have someone else throw an eyeball on one. I don't like when people talk about the "butt dyno" but I keep thinking my car feels smoother when running around in parking lots, stop lights and heavy traffic... it seems to idle easier or something.
I think the picture is throwing everyone off, Jon? The picture has a orange tint to it. I forget the setting on the camera (Outdoor I think)? Here's an example of what I mean: Regular pic with flash Pic with the setting I can't remember. lol
Look a little hot, but AFR looks good...you did a good thing to change to 5107's. What do the old plugs gap at?
I read something somewhere saying those old plugs gapped at .050" I think it was an advertisement for them saying that, along with the fact that they were stock replacements as far as length and heat range. The old plugs had that little V groove in the tip.
You should be gtg now Jon...Do you have a wideband afr gauge? If so, what AFR are you seeing? Been on a dyno yet?
Ya, I have an Innovate WB. Last time I dyno'd was May 2009 at SVS in Sacramento...and my pistons were trashed at the time and didn't find out until June. 477hp/493tq I am heading back there in March on my way to Spring Festival in Irvine. I am curious to see what she will do now. My WOT A/F is around 12.3:1 give or take a little. I had to pull 13% fuel across the RPM range to get there after I drove from sea level to 7000 feet altitude.
Okay then, as long as your knock sensors are enabled, and your injectors are scaled correctly, you should be GTG. A dyno tune would likely yield some increase in power. 12.3 is a little on the rich side, but it is safe. And now with the correct plugs in there, i'm sure you got the dog whipped. Enjoy the ride bro!
