Anyone know how to check if a motor was stolen?

We have a local guy with a 6.1L for sale that I'm planning on buying for another project. The catch is that the story behind the motor is a bit inconsistent. The owner told us that he bought it (cash deal without paperwork) from a friend in Los Angeles. He was told the motor was from a wrecked Charger with less than 5k miles on it. Now when we looked at it, the motor was definitely from an SRT8 Jeep.

When I go to register my new project (eventually), Highway Patrol inspects for any stolen parts. I don't want to get a year and $20k into this to find out the engine is stolen.

I know there is an ID number somewhere on the block. Does anyone know where it is? I'm going to call Highway Patrol tomorrow too and check with them.

Maybe. I found a thread on another forum that shows the 5.7L HEMI has the last 8 of the VIN etched on the back of the block, I was hoping the 6.1 had the same ID. I'll try and get that number off the cover too. Thanks Dave.

There should be a machined pad with a vin down near the oil pan rail Adam. You can see it in this picture....it's painted over but it's just below the motor mount boss and behind the oil filter mount.
