Dropping the tank isn't needed. Even if you only drop one side, the canister comes out and you work on it where ever you want....
I didn't use any loctite on my manifold, but gave the bolts a good tightening. 15,000 miles later, and they are all still tight.
Just have a couple small straight slot screwdrivers on hand. You'll see what I mean when you get the canister out.
I just posted a good How-to for this. The hardest part is opening the canister. Everything else is cake.
