Ok here's the problem! I have 19238 miles on my Nightrunner. My front rotors are cupped. The shop doing the brakes tells me it's that the metal used to make the rotors is softer than the harder pads and that's what has caused the problem. Dodge has acknowledged that this is a problem. Each rotor is $290.00 So my total brake job for just the front end is close to $800.00. I contacted the squealership where I bought the truck and they inform me that the warranty is 12/12. I said that the part was not built properly and they said oh well! Anyone have this problem before and if so how did you resolve it?? Thank you!!:sly:
Ron if you are outta warranty you are screwed, unless you know somebody..My hook up is no longer gainfully employed with Dodge as a viper tech. Lakewood Dodge has a good one maybe buy him a couple donuts and he will get it covered for ya...His name is Jim ! I did not have that problem but I would suggest going a different route with brakes anyway. The one's Joey Mags has are awesome...Shoot him a PM and I am sure he will help you out......Numb Nutz
There is a set for sale new over at the other site, here is the link bro. Hope it helps http://www.vtcoa.com/forums/showthread.php?t=20229
dodge has not said that there is any issues with the rotors. the brakes have a 12 month 12000 mile warranty. alot of it has to do with driving style, and this goes on every vheicle not just the SRT 10s.
I think you should find another place to analyze your brakes. Cupping? Never heard of it. "Harder brake pad than rotor?" BULLCRAP! I have 30k on my truck and they're fine. I would say it's driving style. Have you tried bedding your brakes before you jump off the deep end? If that doesn't fix it the rotors might be too far gone and the deposits have turned to cementite which rotor cutters can't fix and you will need new rotors. Cupping? Seriously. I wouldn't be surprised if that guy told you you need new bumper bearings.
K first of all I've been building vehicles since I was 15. My everyday driver is a 54 willys, so try not to be such a know it all!!! This is an 06 Nightrunner which means that unlike the RC'S I tow a jetsled with it and use it like a truck. I saw the rotors and yes they were CUPPED!!!! So with that being said unless you really know what the hell your talking about dont be so quick to tell some one there ignorant!!
Ronnie, sorry to hear the bad news, I think what you experiencing is also refered to as "warping". This can happen sometimes, but if the problem returns you might want to upgrade to an aftermarket brake rotor. Also I think Tommy was just trying to cheer you up. Bill.
So did you analyze the brakes or did the shop? You said the shop. Why are you getting so defensive when it's clear my comments were not directed at you? Maybe you should relax if you're going to ask a forum what they think. If you had said this was your diagnosis I would've been a little more tactful. With that said, I still have never heard of "cupped" rotors before. Maybe it's a slang term used in a different part of the country than I'm from. If you mean they're just worn down with a ridge on outermost and innermost part of the rotor maybe that's what you mean by cupped? If that's the case. Replacement is the only cure. Regardless, Ductile iron will not wear based on the hardness of the pad exceeding the hardness of the rotor but there is an optimal ratio. Rotors prematurely wear because of the pad material does not reach optimal operating temerature under hard braking and thus is more abbrasive at lower temperatures. This is our plight and has been the plight of first year SRT8 builds. Those rotors grooved at 500 miles!!!! I'm sure the pad material on the trucks is a simliar higher temp pad. I already said it's driving style. You say you tow jet ski's, I don't, my truck is fine. There ya go. Many people have replaced brake rotors and pads unecessarily because of runout or brake deposits that can be removed before they turn to cementite with a brake bedding procedure. I was trying to help you out. My recommendation would be to do what us SRT8 guys do. Buy a lower temp street pad to prevent premature rotor wear. They won't give you the performance of a stock or track pad in that repeated HARD braking will allow fade but will still give you 2 good panic stops without fade and probably make less dust. Sorry to be such a "knowitall" but you're the one who asked a forum for help with your brakes.
