I've been doing allot of work on testing various cam profiles lately trying to come up with a cam design that would make the most of the 6.1 SRT8 platform but safely address the tight valve to piston clearances issues associated with the stock bottom end that does not have any valve clearances notches. After checing and allot of adjusting cam timing and consulting with other cam experts, Performance Research and Development is introducing it's SRT Max cam. There will be three versions of this cam; the stock valve version, the Large valve version (BV) and the high exhaust lobe lift (HELL). The difference is the large valve version has the cam timing slightly retarded to allow enough valve to piston clearance with the larger 2.10" dia intake valves and the SRT Max HELL version requires the use of either the Crower or Manley exhaust valve springs and different valve seals and locators on the exhaust valves. The specs of the SRT Max cam are: 218/222 duration @ 0.050" valve lift 112 Lobe seperation angle (LSA) and 0.566/0.556" lift. The SRT Max Hell has the same duration and LSA but the lift is increased on the exhaust to 0.566/0.578".

This cam is designed to take maximium advantage of the 6.1 hemi within the limits of it's valve to piston and retaner to valve seal requirements. The SRT Max will produce maximum mid range torque and HP acheivable with the stock pistons and valve springs without creating the common clearance problems with the stock pistons and valve springs. Therefore, the name "SRT Max" it's designed to get the max from your SRT.

    Stu,
My 426, built by Indy, has a stock 6.1 cam.
It is about ready to be installed....within 2 weeks.
Will the stock cam work well in the stroker?
I am supercharging the 426 also, will the stock cam work in that application?
    Bill

The stock cam is a good cam and has a wide 161-117 LSA with a bigger exhaust lobe so it is blower friendly and will work OK. Some more duration and lift will help with the big, blown engine though. Depending on the valve springs and valve reliefs in your pistons I'd step the lift up and run something like 224/230 duration but keep the LSA wide at around 114-115 to reduce overlap with the blown engine. Also, if you are going to be pushing allot of boost keep in mind that the boost is pressure on the back of the intake valve and likes to push the valve open. So if your running heavy big valves, 6500 RPM or more and boost you may want to be looking a intake spring like the PAC 1520 or Comp 120 to insure you don't have any valve float issues. There are a few tricks to running those big springs but it's a good spring if you need it.

I have the srt max hell cam in my car and it's out of this world. Just waiting on a tune and then off to the track for some numbers. Part throttle pulls like full throttle with the stock cam. It's just amazing. Great job on the cam stu.

John and Ralph (MOL) both helped out. It went pretty smoothly. The only real problem was trying to get all the air out of the coolant system. We purged the block, but when the t-stat opened a lot of air started moving through the system again. Another purge and it was done.

This set-up is KILLER above 2500 RPMS. It's like a kick in the ass once you cross that line. I'm not going to chance WOT throttle until after tuning on Monday, but I'm sure it will pull like a freight train.

I've only driven up to about 1/2 throttle so far, but I think its streetable. I have the idle set at 850 and there is very little lope. I think after its tuned it will idle somewhere in the 700s. My car is a daily driver and so far its great for local trips too.

I've had the SRTMAX Hell cam in my car for over a week running on a stock tune with the idle set at 850. When I get the cmr tune I believe 800 will be ideal. She is streetable. You live close enoug to me, if you want you can stop by and we can go for a spin...

I've given it full throttle and she is a new animal. With the stock tune and traction control on she still breaks the tires loose from a rolling start. I told stu part-throttle feels like full throttle with the stock cam.
