I was putting on my coilovers with a friend yesterday and the damn pass. stock strut was a pain to get out. We finally wiggled it out and it caught the axel boot a bit. You could here it go *pheeew* Like a bit of air was coming out for a split second. I didn't notice any grease at all... So hmmm, maybe it is fine I thought. Did the rest of the coilovers, no problems. Went to the alignment place and sure enough there was grease all over my pass. wheel, caliper and a bit on my strut. So that leaves me here. What options do I have? I was told that its cheaper just to replace the pass. axel then have them fix the boot and fill it with grease. Is this true? My buddy at work said he drove his Maxima for 3 months with a blown boot before he had problems controlling his car. lol Curious if I should drive it to work and back? 17 highway miles each way. I plan to get mine fixed asap. I don't have power tools so I will either have a shop do it or find a friend who has the knowledge to replace it and help him out. So that being said: Easier to replace the pass. axel or the boot? Cost is my main concern. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Also if I go the axel route where is the cheapest place where I can get it.. Thank You!
just get a new axle. it's easier, cheaper, and safer to just do that than to rebuild it. you can get an axle for $150 or so from the dealer. if you have an autozone near you they do lifetime warranty axles, or at least did lol. you don't need powertools to do it, a few sockets and a bfh and you're good. the only thing that you'll need to buy is a big socket to get the hub out of the way, it's a 22 i think (i have it in my toolbox, i can double check). but a few basic tools and about an hour (the first time, eventually you'll be able to do it in under 20 min lol) and you can replace it yourself. you can drive on a blown passenger side, i drove on it for 2 months or so. as long as you don't floor it around turns you'll be ok. obviously replace it as soon as you can, but it shouldn't leave you stranded unless it completly snaps, which is always a risk you take.......

CV Joint Grease: $5 Black Silicon Gasket-maker: $5 Syringe to inject grease through the hole in the boot: $2 24 hours to let gasket-maker cure. Problem solved (at least temporarily) for $12. (accidentally ruined a CV boot on my SRT-8. Replacement of halfshaft - nearly $1000. I did the above fix, and drove it for 3 months without losing an additional drop of axle grease. Then I upgraded to 1000HP halfshafts anyway. But the fix worked.
Wow, you guys rule! Thanks for the fast replies! I saw the how-to on srtforums and I don't know if I want to do it myself, seems like a PITA. I have a friend that can help me out but I don't know... I will call him up and see if it would help. Thanks for the quick fix Jmatt, but since I am gonna replace the axel I am not gonna worry about that. I will just drive really slow and take it easy.
