Is this catch can necessary for a daily driver? I wonder why the SRT designers didnt think of this? Thanks........
Probably not "necessary"... Seems that these engines (as do some others) pass a bit more oil vapor through the pcv system than others. Some of this condenses in the manifold. Eventually it's going to get sucked in and burned as does the oil vapor that does not condense. Damage? probably not anything that would effect the targeted duty cycle. Damage due to buildup over the normal life of the engine (100K mi?)? probably not. Would your engine run measurably better without it? probably. So without the oil condensation in the manifold your engine should run cleaner and probably more consistent with respect to performance. Why didn't it come with one? Probably cost, maintenance, emissions. Significant cost if only for the hemis. It would have to be bullet proof and dummy proof with stuff like a warning indicator when the resevoir needed emptying, etc. If it did fill up the pcv system would fail and emissions would probably go out the window if the engine managed to keep running properly. I don't know what it takes to get emission certification nationally/internationally for some added device. That's my understanding. Could be completely wrong.
