Yup, that's right Maureen and I QUIT smoking last weekend.

I have to say, this is the HARDEST quitting has ever been for me. Yes, I have quit smoking many times, but this time really is a bitch.

But that's ok because I do NOT plan on falling off the wagon this time either.

Next up, resume jogging again. I really do miss my PT (Physical Training) days of the Army...

I was in the same boat at 21. I smoked since I was 14, so my years committed to it weren't that much. But I quit dipping, smoking and drinking both alcohol and soda.

I went without a drop of alcohol for 7 years before I knew I could trust myself, and I just recently quit drinking the occasional soda. I went 1 year and only had around 10. Next is to cut out beer.

I went to a newer diet that I only get the occasional grains, dairy, and legumes (beans). I have to keep them in my diet since I'm still active duty. Another 6 years, I retire and I can go strict Paleo. The wife and I feel great on the diet too.

She's quit smoking too, and the diet definitely helps.

Gotta find something to help with the ick that comes from it, and something to take your mind off of it. Sugarless gum helps. I had a friend that did his through working out. When he got the urge, he'd PT the $hit out of himself and the cravings would go away. Now he's a beast on the mat and can outrun most of the younger kids in full kit on his team.

No matter how you do it, don't give in. The cravings will hit you at the funniest times. 10+ years now, and I still get the occasional feeling like I want one. The Army was not supportive of quitting. Boredom and staying awake for long periods gave me an unhealthy outlet.

    Best of luck.

haha nope, the Army never has been supportive of quitting smoking.

I used to whip the kids on the 2 mile run. I got out of the Army when I 32 and was never ran the 2 mile slower than an 11 min 30 seconds. haha All that and smoking a pack or so a day. :)

But yea, too old now and my family is prone to lung cancer. My Grandpa and Uncle passed from Lung Cancer. Yes, they both heavy smokers all their lives.

Good for you guys!!...hard thing to do....I quit 26 yrs ago but started dipping Copenhagen so I was still getting my nicotine fix......quit the dip when I bought the 06 SRT Nov 05....I justified trading the RT as what I saved on the the cost of tobacco a month would pay the extra payment......

My advice is to put what you would would have spent on smokes into a savings or even a jar every week.....will pay for a lot of mods or other fun times and give you an incentive to stay off the stuff...

After several months you wont believe how bad smokers stink....

You want to really see the difference. Besides breathing better...
Get a jar and every day put the money you and Maureen would have spent on cigarettes in the jar.

    Turn it into mod money.

It has been going 6 years for me now... and like you smoked 1 -2 packs a day.. and still out run the rookies and most bad guys... my partner and I would get into some hellaish foot pursuits.., catch the the guy tussle with him and once we got him cuffed up would pull out a cigarette and light one up..

Tried quitting several times, but when it came time I knew I was ready and went cold turkey.. now when do i miss smoking... after a good meal... sitting around with the boys and shooting the shit... and when having a drink or two.. I would say after sex as well but that would not be PC so forget i said that.... when did i know it was time to quit .. when the pains in the chest, shortness of breath and night cold sweats started due to lack of O2... and I did not like the taste anymore...

by the way if it is ever determined that I have a terminal medical condition.. guess what I am going to do....

you will never believe how psychological smoking is, driving past land marks, getting in the car, getting out of the driveway, phone ring, commercials on TV, its been an hour etc..

good luck to you both.. you can do it... baby carrots worked for me..

bwahahahahahaha I would do the same after every PT test. The 2 mile run was always last. hahahaha Everyone would look at me like I was nutz... they were right, but yea, still lit up.

Too funny Ken. We share the same about smoking.

I hate GUM. I think gum is worse than smoking so I will not be going that route. I do like the baby carrots though. mmmmm now I'm craving carrots. haha

If you need any support or help call me.. take it a day at a time & if you need to a an hour or 10 minutes at a time..

after a few months though you will begin to notice how good ice cream really tastes... your sense of taste is dramatically affected over time by smoking.. then you get fat like me... actually I am no longer fat... I am just short for my weight..

Wow, maybe you'll be able to taste your salad without dumping a pound of pepper on it soon. :)

Good luck with it, you two. I thought of Maureen just a while ago when I parked next to a Silver SRT Ram at the bank on my way home.

Mom quit a couple of times, the last time seemed to take when she got a serious case of H1N1 two days after starting Chantix. She hasn't smoked in two years now.

Today was the clincher. Had 1bad4dr up on stands while I drained the trans fluid. I'm usually a chimney when working on cars and I didn't even think about having a smoke... I is proud of myself. hehe

Krista is going on 5 weeks. She needed shoulder surgery again and the doc said he would fix her, but not if she didn't quit smoking.

Her dad was a 3-pack a day smoker for many years (also used a bi-pap when he slept)...2 week-ends ago he was life-flighted to SLC, UT with blood clots in his lungs from a hidden tear in his calf. It is amazing he survived, I know of no one else that survived lung clots. He quit cold-turkey and there is no doubt he LOOKS healthier...scared him pretty bad.

You guys keep on it and good for you!!!!
