So whats the scoop on the 2011 SRT8s? I've heard rumors and read articles that state a 6.4 and either 480hp up to 525hp... what have you all heard?! Its a sad day when my SRT8 can be bested by a Mustang GT (2011 version).
Still a Mustang. Don't get me wrong - it's a very impressive car and I'm sure very fast and all that. However, the SRTs are like Ms and AMGs...a step above. Power alone doesn't make it a good overall car plus it's small and utterly impractical for a family for example. Not apples to apples with the large LX/LC vehicles. I know a guy with the GT500....now THAT is a Mustang I can endorse lol

Ummmm i was making the comparison to the progression of the engine technology. Not stating I would care for the 300hp V6 over the 425 V8. The point is, it seems like the other companies are moving forward, and not so much for us. I may be bias as a form Ford boy....but I see all this positive stuff in the news about Ford and Chevy and "exciting new vehicles" and "newly designed high mileage high HP motors". Then in the background "oh yeah dodge did something too...oh well..." With how much our cars weigh in at, it should at the very least have the comparable 300hp 31mpg sorta engine as is in the mustang. but you were talking about engine technology. My point was that the major factors are: How much hp for how much weight? Then there is the constraint of physical size. Then you're into the details like how fast does it wind up, power curves, etc. That's what you want to compare in the context of performance. "how many cylinders?" is from the 70's when they first started putting 6 cylinders in American cars. If it was a 6 cylinder then it was the "economy" model for gas mileage. If you're a sprout head then the mileage really matters to you. Otherwise, if it gets you to the drive-in and back without having to fill up it's good.

Maybe its my simpleton mind here but...how is that arguing against the fact that our engine technology (regardless of cylinders and displacement) is falling behind the other 2 of the "big 3"? lol
I wasn't arguing that we weren't falling behind, just that you didn't put up the right numbers to say one way or the other. Let's say the other rough stuff is in the ball park and the same -- like they both reasonably fit in an engine bay, they both will rev up through the power curve in a reasonable amount of time, they both can be manufactured to be sort of affordable, they'll both last 80K to 100K miles, etc, etc. Then it comes down to how much horsepower for how much weight. For example: Aluminum pieces were a technology advancement. DOHC was a technology advancement. Hemispherical combustion chamber was a technology advancement. stuff like that. So.... how much hp for how much weight? The 6.1L makes 425 hp at a dry weight of ??? lbs. The Ford V6 makes 300 hp at a dry weight of ??? lbs. That would be a comparison. Saying they are making 300 hp with 6 cylinders doesn't really tell you if they are moving ahead technologically. It might be a 800 lb. 6 cylinder.

The closest I can get to a meaningful answer to your question is that the blocks are aluminum haha Quick search didnt come up with the weights of the 3.7L ford engine or the 5.0L coyote engine. But bottom line is (for me at least). I am not a "sprout head" by any definition. But if I could get 425hp and 30mpg...or 425hp and 18mpg....to me thats an easy choice lol.
