My 6 year old son was inside a camper that exploded from a broken heater gas line last week. The explosion blew the windows out, the roof vents off, and completely pulled the metal seam apart around the entire camper sides. Surprisingly, he and his grandfather suffered only 2nd degree burns on the exposed skin, and not all of it. No ear or eye damage, although my son has no eyebrows, stubs for eyelashes and crispy hair all over.

He never shed a tear until days later when we told him he needed to bathe every day...lol. Much better than my wife, I might add :) One funny note...whenever my son would complain about what he had to eat or when he had to go to bed, I would chime in with "c'mon Brax, it could be a lot worse...you could be on fire." Yikes.

A couple trips to the Burn Center in Salt Lake so far but it looks like we are done now. I had Versed once for a shoulder surgery but don't remember anything (that's the idea)...but I watched two nurses SCRUB dead skin off of my son while he laughed at the noise the BP cuff made as it checked his blood pressure every 5 minutes...I need to get my hands on some of that!!!

I consider this a reality check to enjoy every minute we have...we could be in a lot worse shape.

    Before any treatment:

Holy crap Jon! Glad everybody made it though that ok. And yea, life's fragile and too short. You got to live it the best you can. (I think that's harder to do down here in the big cities. When you can see farther you get a bigger picture :)).

    OMG OMG OMG!!!

Very glad he and grandfather are okay.

Anytime I start getting grumpy about life, I take a mental trip back a couple of years and remember how terrified I was with Madeline in NICU. And I say a quiet little thank you and get over myself.

Hope the little guy is feeling 100% soon. And hugs for his mom, I can't imagine what kind of mess I'd be if it were me.

WOW. I am so glad that everyone came out of that with minor injuries. Too many times have I seen Motor homes on the side of the road that have exploded and burnt to the ground. All likely from a leaking gas line?

No surprise the boy is tough, though. Krista has tought the boy well. Daddy is a pansy. lol

I hear that, being a Twin Cities, MN native :)

Thanks Tam. As fragile as I perceive him to be (as opposed to my daughter) he doesn't seem to care, except for all the stuff we have to do now to promote healing. He informed me that he doesn't want his "head heavy" anymore...just like when he goes to the dentist. LOL...not like his old man, that's for sure. I like my head "heavy."

I hear that. I spent a great deal of time on I-80 watching vehicles burn to the ground.

Oh you are a tool man. ;)

My wife and I are so far apart when it comes to doctors/meds/etc. She wants to see a doctor for everything and I for nothing. I suppose somewhere in between is ok :)

He said he didn't hear anything besides "air." There is no doubt grandpa saved them both a GREAT deal of pain/healing later on. Instantly after the explosion he grabbed Braxton and headed out the blown-open door and jumped in the creek 10 yards away. He splashed water on them both until they were shivering.

We are going to long sleeve cotton shirts at the gas plant I work at. I am sold.

Had a similar experience with my dad and tying to lite a hot water heater in a camper, that the pilot went out during the night. He didn't know how long it had been out. In his sleepy stupor, he lite a match and KABOOM! Luckily, i was outside taking a piss...it blew out the windows and caps too. He suffered minor burns to his face and arms...

Glad your son and father are okay, coulda been worse.

LOL...he and Larry are the moonshine connection.

Thanks guys and gals. Definitely an eye opener.

One thought I keep dwelling on...Braxton asked Papa a question: "What do you want me to do if you died?" He was insistant on an answer and pursued the matter. They were 20 miles up in the Wind River Range. I am sure you all can see the giant vacuum that opens up in your heart thinking of your own 6 year old stuck up in the mountains alone next to a burned up camper and locked pick-up truck...wow.

I don't think them Cajuns do moonshine. They just sit around fishing in the swamp and wait for things to ferment.

Man that gives me a chill, time to make sure he understands about what to do in emergencies, like numbers to call and what first aid he can do. Wow...

Pickling! They pickle stuff and salt stuff. Best way to preserve things in spite of the heat and humidity and general tendency of things to go bad in the inclement conditions.
