California has upheld the strictest vehicle emissions laws in all 50 states, punishing those who own modified vehicles and categorizing their rides as "gross polluters". As it appears, CARB (for California Air Resource Board), formed to regulate air quality while determining how clean and fuel-efficient a vehicle should run, is tightening the noose around our industry's neck a wee-bit tighter. These tree-hugging hippies have a long history of tussling with the automotive performance market, devising requirements for every underhood modification imaginable, to advocating increasingly more stringent smog laws in an attempt to legislate performance out of our cars. If CARB attempting to scare the performance industry out of business isn't a bad enough thought, think about this: They just announced that it is illegal to sell, supply, and run race fuel in your street car.

And the situation is worse that it appears. Not only will the owner of any California-registered car break the law by filling that car with race gas, the shop or supply store who sold them the fuel could also receive a hefty fine if caught. Local race tracks offering race gas are also affected by this law, and legally have to stop selling race fuel to vehicles with a license plate. Service stations or performance shops will now have to keep records of who is buying the race gas, for which vehicle it's being used, and in which race it's to be used. The new ban will have a far-reaching effect on enthusiasts who race their high-performance street cars on the weekends, as well as those who participate in local autocrosses and privately organized track days, many of which may not be sanctioned race events recognized by CARB. Fortunately, enthusiasts are still allowed to pump 100-octane CARB-approved fuel at various service stations-but the question is: For how long? And will locally organized track functions soon be required to obtain CARB permits to hold events? How outrageously much will that end up costing enthusiasts?

Make sure you check for any brake lines running over a frame rail. If you're pushing it and bottoming out in the arroyos they got cut across the highway it can pinch a brake line in a hurry, and then you're out in the middle of the desert with no brakes...

If you think the fuel situation is bad, just try and buy ammo here in the next few months.

Christ. Granted I don't mess around with my car much, but it'd be nice to be able to if I wanted or could afford to, oh wait, there's no money to be made out here either.

Is this referring to leaded or unleaded race fuel?

The former I could see but the latter is just friggin retarded.

What does octane have to do with emissions? if anything it would allow the engine to run a higher advance and be more efficient.

Actually higher octane is less efficient. But I don't think the quantity of higher octane gas made and used is enough to be significant. You just don't know anything about CARB. This group is made up of idiots and eco-whacko frauds. There isn't a real scientist in the group. Remember, they're the fine people that poisoned everybody with mandated MTBs a while ago.

Ok then it would be a wash since you could run much closer to TDC when the cylinder fires and make that up right?

I have read some CARB regulations and they tend to bring my head to a screeching hault. It hears these dumbasses and then decides "hey lets figure out wtf they just said" then blood begins to drip from my ears. :stars:

They're the geniuses who want to ban black cars because black cars are less fuel efficient and require more air conditioning, also they want to encourage everyone to get super-reflective tint to reduce the need for air conditioning in cars and improve fuel efficiency. Retarded doesn't BEGIN to cover it.

I don't think so. Higher octane gas simply has less energy in it for the same amount. Burn 1 gallon of low octane gas and you get more energy than burning 1 gallon of high octane gas.

That's different than getting more power out of the same engine.
I don't know if it takes more or less oil to make 1 gallon of high or low octane gas.
I don't know the impact of what it takes to make higher octane gas.

I also don't know the difference it makes with respect to emissions.
Does burning a gallon of high octane gas necessarily mean it's going to produce significantly more emissions than burning a gallon of lower octane gas?

More than likely their reasons are actually:
It's only recreational racers and high performance enthusiasts that use high octane gas. General public opinion will be easily swayed against them since they're going to be a minority. We can commission millions of dollars of phoney studies and bureaucracy and meetings and regulations and headlines and justify our existance. :D
