Does anybody on here have any experience with registering/titling a vehicle that does not have a title? To make a long story short, I looked at an old truck today, will be a project truck, for me and my son. It runs, but has some issues that will need fixing to get it really driveable. The thing that scares me is there is no title. The "owner" bought it a few years ago, on a bill of sale. He never re-registered it in his name, so if I buy it, he'll bill of sale it to me. The truck hasn't been registered since like 2005/2006. Now, I'm in no hurry to get the thing driveable, as it will be 1st car for my son to drive...in about 3 years...but if I can't get the thing registered/titled it's not worth the $500 the guy wants.

So has anyone ever bought a car on a bill of sale, and gone through the process of getting it titled/registered? Any advice on things I need to make sure I get from the guy, if we buy it?

I plan on calling the tag office tomorrow, I'm just looking for some early advice, and or things I need to check into when I talk to the tag office.

I think that all States have a lost title clause.

The seller may have to apply for a "Lost Title" though?

Thanks for the link...but I already browsed through there.

I figured title laws were different from state to state, that's why I'm talking to the tag office before I buy, not after. I was just curious if anyone has been through the process and could offer any insight or advice.

I talked to my boss this morning, and his son has been though the process...he says it wasn't too bad. So I'll see what the tag office says when they open. Then who knows...maybe my Mopar collection will grow by one.:bigwink:

Nope. LOL! It's not really in too bad of condition, considering the thing is about 26 years old...but it's no beauty queen either.

Not sure about GA, but make sure the VIN plate is intact and not altered, and that whatever paperwork is still around refers to that VIN. If the VIN plate is gone, replaced or altered it can be a nightmare.

Any LE agency can run a registration check by the VIN and you may get lucky and come up with some previous owner information if the truck hasn't moved very far county-wise. (In WY, counties handle the registration)

All a bill of sale is for is to pay sales tax...actual transfer of ownership is only by title.

You can also find out if that truck has been listed as stolen, which would be unfortunate.

    What year is the truck?

    (edit: ooof, I see "26 years old" lesssee, 2010 minus 26 = 1984) :)

 close enough...it is an '85. I say 26 years, 'cause I figure it probably hit the streets in 84 anyways.:bigwink:

After talking to the tag office, I was told for a BOS purchase we would need the bill of sale...obviously:rofl:...and a VIN check form filled out by a police officer. When I told the seller, he said sure, then called me back 5 min later, to tell me the he was on the way to the truck, with the cops, did I have the form. LOL!

Here are some pics of my son's first car...

Obviuosly, everything checked out with the cops, so with any luck there won't be any problems on Monday when I go to get the registration stuff taken care of, since I have every thing they said I needed.

I also think I am going crazy for letting my 12 year old son buy a truck...but that's a whole different story.

Holy crap, that things pristine. Great shape! $450 is the bargain of a lifetime (especially his since he's only 12 :)). What a great first car too. Maybe a bit on the large size to learn in but on the other hand he'll be driving a tank. Put a roll cage and 5 point belts in there and that'll remind him to pay attention.

 I wouldn't call it pristine. But it was a steal for $500. The last $500 car I bought had the transmission in the trunk, and was not as nice on the inside as this thing. He really scored a great project vehicle. Probably why I agreed to let him get it...well that and it's a Dodge.:bigwink:

$500. You keep saying $500 but you didn't completely wash off the $450 on the windshield... did you charge the kid vig on the deal?

Hahahahahaha...it wasn't $450 it was $950. And I wish I could take credit for teaching him how to negotiate, but the $950 was a left over from when the other guy originally bought the truck. Soap and water wouldn't even take it off...I had to razor blade it. LOL! The guy was asking for his $500 back, 'cause that's what he negotiated his buy for, and honestly I couldn't see trying to go any lower...'cause $500 seemed too good to be true to me. Like I said before the last time I bought a Ramcharger for $500 it had the Tranny in the bed/trunk. I had to tow it home, and the inside was a lot worse than this one. This one, I was actually able to drive to the house.

I hope so. I know he's excited right now...I just hope he doesn't lose his enthusiasm as the this project drags on.
