We are? Wow....news to me. Ujokin is the only current car running a large gear(3.92)All the rest are on much smaller.I will be running a 3.73 shortly and after that I haven't heard of anyone else.

You didn't do so well in that department... She wants, you want, she gets the fridge of her dreams and you get new gears and rear end. And maybe even not reminded any more about the cam and headers.

Out of the top 10 LX's, I can only think of 1 running gears. Also, someone installed some gears in their vehicle lately and ran on Sunday and was .3 slower than their previous best and lost mph. I would be very careful. 3.23 seems to be about perfect.

    That would get you about 116 - 117mph at 6200 in 3rd.

But Rick is interested in the twisties... must be a couple of turns at the proving grounds giving him problems.

    I was running a 27" tire (255/35/20), essentially a 3.23 ratio...felt good to me.
Now adding something close to stock height (305/35/20 dr's) and will likely go to a 3.23 gear when I do a wavetrac lsd.

Alright fellas...question? You guys know what I like. I can see where I'll benefit from a LSD. Will gears make my car faster just doing my normal spirited runs and later at a road course? Are guys not seeing real gains with gears just because of the lower traps? I don't take my car above 80 or 90 mph too often.

You're going to have the most control with the lowest gears you can get. Your gears will be closest together. Less of a jump if you down shift or upshift. To optimize for the road course you would want to pick the max speed you'd go and have your top gear redline there. Then the tradeoff is driveability. Right now you're probably cruising on the highway at around 1800? Are you willing to be cruising at the same speed but turning 2500 or 3000? Ideally you would want different gears for different courses. If you go to the course with the huge back straightaway and you're redlining half way down the straight you're not going to be happy.

Pick the rpm you're willing to cruise at on the highway and pick the gears for that. ...you're getting into a purpose built car now.

The drag strip is very different. The idea there is to stay in a fairly narrow peak power band (rpm). On the other hand, shifts take time so too many gears will cost you. There is also that finish line 1/4 mile away. You don't want to top out in one gear and be shifting into the next 200 or 300 feet from the line when a slightly different gear ratio would have got you there before you redlined. Again, there is that driveability issue if you drive it on the street.

Thanks Dave! I don't do much highway driving and if I got the gears I could just slow down a bit for my highway trips if it got too annoying. But, I might be better off just doing heads, cam, and tune later on after installing the Wavetrac.

You have whatever power you have. To make the most of whatever you have, tighter gears will always give you more control that someone like you could make use of. You want to be right in the sweet spot (rpm wise) or as close as possible in the twisties.

I guess I didn't read your response carefully enough. Lowest gears meaning 3.23, 3.55 etc?

    Exactly. or maybe 4.73 :)
That "compresses" the difference from 1st to 5th so your gears are "closer together".
haha, with a 4.73 rear end you're going to be turning about 3600 rpm in 5th gear at 80mph (basically screaming)
Stock, with a 3.06 rear end you're turning about 2300 rpm in 5th gear at 80mph.

    3.73 might be driveable.
If you want to see the difference then
Cruising at 80 mph in 4th gear with the stock 3.06 rear end would be about the same as 5th gear with a 3.73 rear end.

    3.06, 80mph, 4th = 2834 rpm
    3.73, 80mph, 5th = 2867 rpm

Dave, will you post what RPM 3.06 vs 3.23 will be at 65 mph and 80 mph? Thanks bro.

You might as well just post the other gear comparisons too!
