I looked over my coverage with my mom on the phone (she takes claims for AllState) and apparently, even though I have UMPD because I don't have the Waiver for the collision deductible, I have to pay the deductible. They consider it collision because they don't know for sure this was another motorist, nor do they have another motorist to harass about this, so for all they know it was a grocery cart or random debris that whacked my car.

    Pics:

Alright, no obvious damage from this angle, just a filthy Charger that desperately needs some detail love
    [IMG]

It didn't come out well in this picture but the bottom edge of the signal light shell is cracked/broken. And I'm wondering about that circular scratchy area by the reflection of my knee.

That looks like a scratch on the egde of the fascia by the wheel well, right?

    Nope, full on crack. *sigh*
    [IMG]

Okay, so yeah its not the worst ding ever, but just enough damage to justify taking it in. Plus they may find more underneath when they get it opened up.

How much is the stock fascia unpainted? You can get Grip like Ron's for around $700.00.

Damage really isn't that bad. Replace the corner lens (ebay for under 20.00) and touch up paint the crack....Maybe just file a claim, get the money and wait until you find one used on ebay or cleveland pick-a-part or similar, that is already painted...Could save you some $$$

Took it to the insurance recommended shop, they've done work for me before, maybe not artistic, but good work and its guaranteed by the insurance if it doesn't get done right.

At this point I'm stretched too thin to really go all out with finding parts and people to do the work and all that. I'm planning for a full "refresh" on the Charger once I'm back to work, figure make her shiny like new and put on a LOT of clear coat. After all, I like to drive her too much.

Also planning on getting better insurance coverage so if this happens again, its not out of my pocket.

Stock, unpainted fascia is 1300 bucks......guess how I know that??

I had to get mine replaced a few months ago. Cost 2300 bucks after all was said and done.

Tam, I would recommend getting down to a 100 dollar deductable...For me it was around 15 bucks more a month....way worth it to me. It's way easier to come up with 100 bucks, vice 500.

Holy crap... just got the call about the car. They're gonna replace the side marker/signal, the bumper AND the left front wheel becuase it got scratched as well. Looking at a cost of at least $2400 but with the bumper they're expecting $3800. Glad I called insurance.

Just checked out the online claim info and apparently they called out to two different shops about repairing the wheel, and ended up deciding to replace it. Even Marc is wondering "who's the a**-hole" that smacked my car that hard and didn't leave a note or anything and what does THEIR car look like. We don't think it was a truck because it was so low on my car.

What they got home from partying (on a Tuesday night) and woke up the next morning wondering why the rear end of their car is caved in?

What wheel scratches? you didn't notice that before?
And that sounds like a great deal. I didn't know they could get stock wheels that cheap. I sort of remember a good dealer wheel price on a stock wheel was around $1300?

If the wheel isn't too bad, just keep it, and apply those funds toward the deductible.

Yeah, the bumper's listed at around $1400 and in stock but they have to wait on the new wheel at that price. Isn't surprising considering how popular the wheels are.

I'm out $500 regardless of whether they keep or replace the wheel. I'd just be interested to see just how messed up the wheel was, since it didn't look any more um, messed up than usual considering I don't really worry that much about keeping my wheels pristine.

Whaaaat? I don't understand why. Insurance should total the parts and labor, deduct the deductible (hence the name) then cut you a check for the balance. At least that's how my insurance works (Progressive)

Well, by that logic, keeping the wheel instead of replacing it means I get a smaller check since the deductible is fixed at $500. $3800 - $500 is more than $2800 - $500. ;)

I get what you're saying but that's how insurance is. Insurance only pays for repair costs that are over and above the deductible. So I'd rather get a brand new wheel for $500 than keep my old one for $500.

No. That's not how it usually is. You almost always have the option of taking a check for the amount of the approved estimate.

    1) you get an estimate from their approved shop
    2) you get an estimate from one of their shops and a few of your own favorite shops. If they differ then they pick the lowest of your estimates or they compromise somewhere between their's and yours. Usually their approved shops are above average quality and work.

Then you can get the car fixed and they pay the full bill directly to the shop (actually the shop bills them directly). It could be under the estimate or over the estimate. At that point you're out of the picture and they deal directly with the shop and you get the car out fixed.

OR.. You can say "I'll just live with it. Give me a check for the amount of the estimate". I haven't seen any cases where they don't do that. They don't really care since it's the same dime to them and usually they make out just a little bit because it's not often you get body shop (or any other) work done and the final bill comes in under the estimate.

so... what you most probably have the option of doing is -- "Do the body work and give me a check for the wheel". Then you take the wheel money and use that to pay the deductible and you should have at least 600 to 800 to pocket. (don't forget install and balance -- and maybe even alignment).

Nothing shady about it, nothing underhanded or secret. You sustained a covered loss and they have agreed to pay the claim. Whether you actually get the car fixed or not has nothing to do with it and they really don't care one way or the other.

Okay, well I'm the dumb girl who just sends it to the shop they approve of and gets the work done and pays the deductible portion and never gets a check.

Nothing wrong with that. It's a complete wash. You pay the deductible one way or the other. You have a claim for $X - $deductible. Whether you get the work or the equivalent in cash is exactly the same value.

^^ x 2..You could file the claim and not have ANY work done and pocket the entire amount if you want.
