For those that don't know whats up here is my previous thread http://www.srtconnection.com/forums/showthread.php?t=16541 Well it turns out that the plugs I pulled where from cyl. 7 not 8 like I thought and the plugs from 8 where far worse. Unfortunately this all occurred about 400 miles from home and I had limited tools at my disposal. So after about a month I had the car brought home (Left It with my family) and finally took it to the mechanic last Thursday and he got on it Monday. He did the leak down test on all the cyl' and used a bore scope. He was satisfied with the leak down test and said the piston tops had a few hot spots and a little bit of piting (I asume from spark plug parts bouncing around in there) but nothing to bad. Needless to say with four new spark plugs I am back on the road. Seems the other plugs where still in working order but I plan to change them all. So my conclusion is that I leaned out the motor but got lucky. The reason for leaning out that I concluded is the change in weather. There was probably a 25deg change in temperature and I guess the car had not adapted to to the changes (Even though I had a good number of miles in the cooler weather). It does bother me that I specifically asked my tuner about needing to retune for colder weather and was told that the adaptives should take care of that. I am curios of everyone's opinion on this as I am just throwing ideas around. I think it just happened once and was only a short WOT because I got an engine light almost immediately after launching it and let off pretty quick Also I have decided to go to Johann at diablo and get dyno tuned So here come the questions Should I be concerned about the condition of the motor as it is or did I really dodge a bullet on this one? The people I have spoken to said as long as I am properly tunes and it doesn't happen again I should be fine. What gauges/monitors/logging devices should I get? My build came out of necessity and was not pre planned so I figured I would do everything I wanted with the motor and would get the gauges and what not next. Well, lesson learned so no preaching please. I thought with the people I was using and the logging & dyno time I was covered. Guess not. SO give me some suggestions on the cheap and if money is no object on what set-up I should use. I am considering both the trinity or DashDaq with A/F but thats a good chunk of change given my current finacial status but if it worth it I'll strongly consider it.
I don't think the cold had anything to do with it. I fire my car up anywhere from -30 degrees F to 105 degrees F...as do many others I am sure. I don't know what happened to your spark plugs though...I haven't heard of them coming apart except when something else hits them i.e. piston or valve parts.
Well I took it out for a drive and it was a little rough at first but has smooth out since (adaptive relearning I would assume) and I get no engine lights and it runs smooth. Only had it up to about 4000 Rpm. The only think is that it sounds louder. I don't think its my imagination but it sounds throat-e-er :hmm:. Could what happened have done something to my cats?
I'd have figured you'd be curious as to condition of pistons - maybe get a better look by pulling one of the heads? on jeeps, passenger is easier than driver, which would give you a look at good ole cylinder 8.
I not sure why your saying that when you started a thread about temps affecting A/F ratios. As stated I believe I leaned out on a short wot run thus the damage to the plugs http://srtconnection.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8843
I hope all is well, and it may very well be. But what if....If my plugs looked like that, i'de pull the head and be sure. A scope is good if the damage is evident, but if it's slight, it could easily be missed, and still run fine for a while. Whatever you decide, good luck.
Could be a differance in the tune or just a Jeep thing http://www.cherokeesrt8.com/forums/showthread.php?t=36599
Sarge thanks for posting that, I think with a good CMR tune you not as effected by temps change as drastically as you are with a canned tune. I'm no CMR whiz but have done enough dataglogging and revised tuning to understand that certain parameters within the CMR software can help/negate most temp changes and Im sure those are not addressed in the canned diablo tunes.
Damn Joel, you at least need to get a wideband. You have a lot of money invested in that beast to be running around with no way to monitor the engine.
Get a DashDAQ. Redfox (Nathan) carries them. For a wideband go with Innovate (LC-1), PLX, FAST. The Innovate or PLX can be bought as "components" so you don't have to buy the display gauge (which you'll be using the DashDAQ for). Innovate is less expensive and has the controller integrated in the cable.
