Hey guys and gals....the time is approaching. Slowly...but it's approaching. I am getting 'used' to the performance of the car...and I want to step it up. Herein lies the problem.....I live in Kalifornia, and therefore subject to SMOG inspections and the like. When I had my SRT-4, I got around this problem by getting stock parts ported out. Intake/exhaust manifold, turbo, throttle-body, etc. Decent performance gains, looked all stock. So..the question is, do any of our vendors do this kind of thing for the 6.1?? And, if so, is it worth it?? With the neon, there were 'seat of the pants' increases, as well as getting over 311 FWHP on the dyno. All with stock, ported parts. I was just curious if there was performance to be had on the Charger... Let me know, guys!! Thanks.
You don't have to port much, and anything "Internal", C.A.R.B. will not know. haha Unless you tell them. Hell, you can stick a 426 Stroker in there and they would never know the difference. Get with Cam from CTP.
As much as I'd LOVE to throw a 426 in there.....I simply can't afford that. Would heads and a cam throw the emissions out of whack??
So, here is my plans for some performance gains, while hopefully maintaining a 'legal' vehicle in Kalifornia... Throttle body...possibly a ported stocker. Intake manifold...is there any gains from a ported stocker?? does anyone do it?? heads cam headers cat-back...possibly zoomers...or corsa....still undecided on which sounds better. Not sure if I want to do midpipes with high-flow cats. If it can still pass SMOG, then I'll go there too.
You might be pushing it on the high flows. The emissions at the sniffer might be ok but it's sort of touch and go getting the PCM all copasetic with everything. More often than not you can get it into the ready state with the rear 02s turned on and not have it throw a code (at least not right away). I'm sure you're aware that separate from the sniffer readings, everything remotely having to do with emissions has to be CARB approved/certified. The high flows (to some extent) and more the Zoomers will be visibly not stock. I haven't heard of one yet (and it would just be a matter of going to the next inspection station) but they could reject it for that even with the sniffer readings in spec. They'd never see or look for the heads and cam. Probably the same for the headers unless they were long tubes which stick out like a sore thumb... The stock shorties aren't too bad.
I know the highflows would 'possibly' fail the visual. However, 99% of the techies wouldn't know the difference. All they want to see is that the cats are still there. And cat-backs are legal, as long as they are under 95 decibels. And does anyone make a CARB certified intake?? I have a K&N on there now.
