I installed a BT Catch can several months ago and everything seemed to work great. However, just yesterday I changed the oil from 0W-40 to 10W-30 Mobil 1 synthetic. When I started the car everything seemed fine, but then I heard a strange noise. I located it and noticed that the hoses running from / to the BT catch can seemed to be squished flat. I tried to squeeze the sides of the hose to "open" them up. However, the hoses just could not hold their shape and stay open. There also seemed to be alot of vacuum pressure I could hear in the hoses when I tried to "open" them. I used standard heater hose for the BT Catch can installation. Should I be using something different? I've never noticed this before. I wouldn't think switching to 10W-30 would cause any issues. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.
the pretroleum base in oil will soften the side walls of regular heater hose and eventually turn it into mush and then into jelly. Regular heater hose is good for water and coolant only. You need to use a fuel grade hose, preferably fuel hose made for diesel fuel.
I use 1/2" general purpose air hose with success. Air tools are lubricated through the air lines, so the hose will not degrade from petroleum products through it.
Heater hose was sold as a inexpensive alternative to the more expensive fuel line.We had a discription on the item at the time warning customers of the issues after long time use of the heater hose.At this present time we no longer even offer heater hose.Matter of fact we have not offered that option for a couple months now. But Dookie is correct Napa and other auto parts stores offer the fuel line/Air line.
Great. Thanks for the input. I will stop by NAPA today. What size was it again...1/2" fuel hose that I need? Also, would this issue, the flattening of the hose, have an detrimental affect on my motor? Not being able to vent the vapor??
Napa sells it off the bulk reel. Says this on the hose (at least on the hose I bought there a year or two ago): "XL FUEL LINE 1/2 INCH (12.7mm) SAE 30R7 NOT FOR FUEL INJECTION SYSTEMS MADE IN U.S.A. BY GATES <some numbers>"
Yeah, just tell them you need some 1/2" i.d. fuel line...your mount location will determine footage....Just bring your heater hose in for length reference. Nah, don't worry about it. Swap it out and you're fine.
After reading some additional posts here, it seems like most people use either the stock 0W-40 or TSB recommended 15W-50 Mobil 1 synthetic oil. I used 10W-30 Mobil 1 since that is what I use in all of my other cars. Is this ok for the SRT8 or should I replace it with 15W-50. I live in S. California, so it never really gets very cold here. Thanks.
I'd stick with the 0w/40 or 15w/50. Either one. If you go with the 15w/50 since it never gets cold there, the 15w/50 would be just fine year around instead of switching back to 0w/40 for the winter.
I know I saw 10w-30 recommended in a forum somewhere. I know the 10 portion is fine, I just don't know if the 30w provides enough protection in hot weather. Anyways, I wouldn't think this would be a problem. I use this weight oil in my other cars (recommended). I sure would hate to have to change the oil again and waste this oil. However, I will if someone knows for sure that this will hurt the engine. Thanks.
As far as the fuel line goes.... A lot of members have gone the full route with AN fittings and SS braided hose. It looks really nice. You could also use the fake AN fittings with hose clamps inside on the SS braided limes, but it just isn't as "clean". You can search the threads for correct AN part numbers. There is even a member that makes the pcv valve with an AN fitting on it, instead of a barb.
Just an update: I spoke with Ryan at Stack Performance in Anaheim CA about the oil. (Stack Performance is a well known SRT8 shop in CA). Per Ryan, 10W-30 works just fine in the SRT8 engines. I think for the next oil change I will just use 15W-50 or the standard 0W-40. I just hate to dump 7 quarts of 10W-30 if I don't have to.
