I'm also interested in how you do your roll bar. I'm wondering if there's a way to build one that complies with the rules, but can still be physically removed.
Nathan is working on that...but I don't think it can be done.Mine will be full weld in 8 point with 5 point harnesses.
That's what I figured. Isn't 5 point all that's required for 11.499? With 6 point for 10.999? Where are points 7 and 8?
It's 8 point at 11.49 and 12 point at 9.99.........the rules are a little different for full body cars.
Section 5A - Super Pro, Pro, Sportsman Rule 4, page 103: "Roll bar mandatory in all cars . . . running 11.00 to 11.49" Page 104: "Roll cage mandatory in cars running 10.99 or quicker or any car exceeding 135 mph. In full-bodied cars, with unaltered firewall, floor, and body . . . running between 10.00 and 10.99, roll bar permitted in place of roll cage. general rules for roll cage construction are found in general rule 4:10, starting on page 76. There's even a drawing depicting the roll bar. It includes a main hoop, mounted at the right and left side right behind the driver. Then two rear braces running from the top of the hoop toward the rear. Finally, there's one brace running from the main hoop down toward the driver's left foot. 5 points (mounting points to the unibody). There's also a cross brace on the main hoop, to which 5-point driving harness mounts. Maybe that's what you mean by 7 point? Anyway, the 5 point (which you may be calling 7 point) should work all the way down to 10.00 seconds. I have a partial picture of an installed roll bar: I wish I had taken more pics of that roll bar install.
What is it from 10.99 to 9.99 then?Did they change the cage rules from 07 to 08?Maybe it needs to be different with the removable front downtubes?
Because we're full-bodied cars with unaltered firewalls and floors, the rule from 10.00 to 10.99 is the same as the rule from 11.00 to 11.499. All you need is the "roll bar" (which is more than just a simple bar). You don't need a full roll cage until 9.99 seconds. Give me a second and I'll scan and post the relevant two pages so you (and anyone else) can see first hand.
This is starting to become relevant as many of us get close to (or do better than) 11.499 seconds in the 1/4 mile. Basically, no physical modifications are needed until 11.499 seconds. From 10.000 to 11.499 seconds, we need roll bars, assuming we have stock firewall and floor in place. Below 10.000 seconds requires a roll cage. The above discussion was started in another thread and moved here so more can reference it.
so not that i need it...but just cause i am interested in it... what would constitute a roll bar?...could you have one in your car without basically ruining the inside?...the full cage can be cumbersome...but if its just a roll bar is that too bad?
It can physically be mounted sandwhich style: 6" by 6" steel plate above and below the floor, held together with four 3/8" bolts. However, the whole unit must be welded together, and I doubt one could be designed that could get wrangled into and out of the car. I'd love to know if the SRT engineers were able to remove their roll bar or not. So basically - it ruins the car as a passenger vehicle, at least for the rear seat. It would look, at a minimum, like figure "A" in post #9 above, or the photograph in post #6 above.
these bars make putting the kids in the back the only passengers you could manage!!! i remember putting the roll cage in my old bugs....... major pain, but was mandatory with my car running 12's for that type of car back then. i guess my goal will be 11.5's and no more!!! hahahahahaha
I figure I'll run on motor at most tracks, or with only one stage of nitrous so I stay slower than 11.50 seconds. Then for LX get togethers, where rules may be more lax, I'll open it up. I figure I can get at least one fast run in per track.
Supposedly the rear bars can follow the roof line till they get behind the back seat. That is what I am going for.
Yes, that is true. I don't know where to find that quote right away, but that is how most are actually built.
