I had 1000 HP half shafts installed in anticipation of the power gain of the Super Charger. After my 5th track day this year I had a vibration around 80 mph, didn’t think much off it I thought it was time for a new set of tires, fortunately the last session was cut short due to a Subaru in the group before me losing his brakes and going into a wall and catching fire, he’s okay. The next day I take her off the trailer make a short run to the hardware store and I hear a clicking sound like a bad U joint. When I get back to the garage I got it up on jack stands to give it the once over, and what do I find all but one bolt on the driver side half shaft tight, and the passenger side bolts barely tight. I called the Drive Shaft Shop and asked them if this a common problem and they said no. He said that when they ship them they are not torqued to 57 Lbs, I hope that the shop that installed them did forget to check them and this isn’t going to on going issue. Here are some Pics.
Tell me about it the 1/2 hour session was cut to only 15 min. Another 15 min of track time could have been catastrophic.
Not "Could", rather "Would" have been catastrophic. Hell, you need to find that Suburu owner and buy him a few beers. lol Oh yea, and tell the guys who installed the 1/2 shafts that they need to fix this issue. The bolts coming lose is proof that they did not check the torque on those bolts.
I'm waiting to call them. I want to get under the car again and get the part # of the axles, after looking at the Drive Shaft Shop web site I have a feeling these are their 500 hp axles not their 1000 Hp. I was billed 2k for 1200 hp axles, and if these are their 500hp axles their listed on line for $1300 .
Well, that is another issue in itself. lol It won't matter what hp rating the 1/2 shafts are for bolts coming lose. The fact is, no one checked them before or after install.
Got it up this afternoon and they are their level 5 shafts on their. I'm going to give the installer a call tomorrow and ask him if he did torque them. Do you guys know any thing about wiping the grease of the two surfaces before re torque, the Drive Shaft Shop said that I should do that? Does that mean I need to disassemble that hub that the bolts came out; are their any Pics of them disassembled?
Yes, you should clean the bolts off. Any grease will throw off your torque reading. I would put blue loc-tite on them too when you reinstall them. You shouldn't need to disassemble anything. I would go around the joint and reinstall the bolts one at a time, but in a star pattern like when torquing down the lug nuts.
