Quick, dude (with emphasis), you just summarized the final place I came to with regard to my issue. Thank you That is the only explanation I can come to so far. We'll see what happens when I get keepers in that hold the valve where they should be. I searched many pics and other than failures, my valve tip looks so low in the retainer...this would explain everything...except my wife I guess...fffththththththt
What holds those retainers on there? If it's collars could those be failing/squashing so the retainers are moving up the stem? It was fine before but 7K later...?
Dave, Apparently I had the wrong retainer locks from the beginning and I was ALWAYS really close to my rocker arms. This would also allow the springs to unload a slight bit more with whatever consequence that had. I don't know if they are supposed to spin but I will bet 99% that they do based on my retainers. What brought this to my attention was a sudden intermittent knocking every few seconds on Sunday morning. Heck, I was drunk the night before so I missed it, OK??? Andy with PPP had been great and shipped me the correct locks...I have a new set of 6.1 lifters in case I have to pull my heads. We will see...maybe I can get called in again as a reckless driver to the PD for burning rubber as far as I see fit. The odd thing is my wife is the dispatch supervisor, was working and took the call (blonde guy...spinning...noise...smoke...hat and grinning...) NOOOO SEX FOWWWW YEWWWW. Fuck that.
Yea, I got it. But you were wondering why it just started making noise now instead of from the beginning. If it was collars that lock the retainers on the stems then I was thinking maybe they're failing slowly and the retainers are working their way closer to the rockers? ...before they fail completely and come off... even though it's a bad situation you have to be feeling pretty pumped up that you caught it at this stage.
I have thought about that. I can guarantee you when I get the current keepers and retainers off and am looking at the valve stem I will mic the groove and compare it to what it is supposed to be. That shouldn't take me a minute each as long as I am there. Andy did say the errant keepers let the retainer sit way too high. Yup, I agree. I bet when I pull the pass valve cover I see the same scuffing...I bet ALL of my retainers have been right at the edge. Edit: I hope you didn't think I was serious with the "so I missed it ok???" earlier. I am sooo not like that
If you have minimal clearance between the two components, that distance is going to get smaller as time progresses. Just for clarification, they are not the wrong locks/keepers, they are the manley locks which work perfectly fine with the manley retainers, but somehow they got stuck on these heads with our taller retainers. New locks were sent out hopefully to eliminate the sound. Keep us posted John.

I discussed this with Andy. I was wondering who checked the installed spring height when the heads were assembled??? The incorrect keepers were installed on this particular set of heads which made it through to my car. The cookie-cutter PPP stage II head has the correct keepers I am about to receive and many have the Manley springs I have. I am assuming by replacing my keepers and lowering my retainer on the valve (also compressing the spring more) I will get to where I should have been from the beginning. What do you think?
Got a spring height checker?Wouldn't take 5 minutes to verify the spring height while its apart and verify it's good or change a shim.
The difference in height will affect close seat pressure, but not open seat pressure. Even when closed, a difference of .013" isnt measureable in pounds of seat pressure. OD 1.076" Top 1.311" Bottom ID .650" Top .885" Bottom 150 @ 1.800 355 @ 1.200 Rate (lbs/in) 341 Coil Bind 1.085" (.715" Lift)

Hey John, thought I'd share what to look for on a damaged valve. The exhaust valves are perfect (so far, haven't taken them apart and checked the keeper grove. Look at the intakes closely and you'll see what I was talking about. Exhaust Intake
I'm thinking I might have the same problem, noticed the sound on the drivers side starting this week... have metal particles in bottom of catch can & on my magnetic drain plug after my first oil change with the new combo... just pulled the valve cover.... :help: Ok, had a beer or quite a few...didn't want to panic yet....lol
Metal on the mag is not good. That's rocker arm material. The metal shavings that's nonferrous is the stainless or inconel from the valve. If you valves look like this. Rip it a part. I had the same problem a 1-1/2yr ago. But I lost a huge amount of material off the valve and the rocker. Freaked me out and I pulled the motor down for inspection. Luckly everything was clean on the mains and rods. but I replaced everything else 100%. Oil pump, lifters, rockers and shafts, push rods. If you do it yourself, it's about a 8-9 hundy deal. . Now that I see this......I'd check the oil pump for the misalignment. It doesnt take that long for the piece of mind. It is starting to pop up on several 426 K1 crank engines engines since then. I posted this problem sometime back on several forums. .
Welp, pulled drivers valve cover and rockers and I guess my wear looks normal, no rubbing in the valvetrain that anyone could see in my pics. I guess the metal is coming from somewhere else.... Next look is the timing set I guess.
