Gorgeous day outside so you know the 8 is coming out to play, hit the gym and finish up, the day is looking promising so far right? Pull out of the gym with a buddy because he wants to see what the 8's got so we go around a few blocks, this guy is loving the car so far. Driving back to drop him off I hit a dip in the road the dashboard light up, ESP, ABS, basically anything related to traction and brakes, the dashboard looks like a Christmas tree basically and the car just rolls to a stop in drive. I shut it off put it in park and it starts rolling in reverse while in park, WTF! Put the E brake on put it in D look under it and I can see the drive shaft spinning at the rear differential, thats one toasted diff so I think. I start looking closer and all the brackets that hold the rear diff in place have all cracked, now I cant see if there welded to the actual rear end or what but im hoping they just have to replace the diff and not the entire rear end. Ill know more Monday afternoon. I have been hearing some weird noises from the rear lately and I guess now I finally know what it was, no big deal either I get a new diff or entire rear end. Maybe if im lucky the will drop a 2009 diff back in with limited slip, positive thinking baby, actually going to ask my dealer to ask Chrysler for a 2009 Chally diff and ill pay the difference. Shit happens right?:sly:
Who knows but the brackets that hold the diff are a heavy gauge steel and they snapped like twigs it looks like, factory defect who knows.
LMAO Thanks Rick, I look at the positive side the differential has held up well but the metal brackets that hold it in place failed and took the diff with it when they snapped. I cant see this then anything else then a defect from the factory. Hopefully the have a rear end that is supersedes the one that came from the factory. I will push for the 09 Chally diff though.
Dayum!!!! Yeah, hope you can get a chally limited slip rear for all that. Sorry to hear it though bro. Good luck!!
I could have been worse... I read the title and thought someone had crashed into the back of you. I'm guessing it was bolted, they were loose and sheared.
Where they cracked there were bolt supports. Here is a question for everyone after this happened obviously I had to put it into drive as the drive shaft was spinning, when I did that I heard a noise from the base of the transmission as the drive shaft came to a halt, hard to describe the noise tatatatatatata, im assuming that was the gears in the torque converter as the shaft was coming to a stop. Thoughts?
The bracket on mine cracked and the diff moved down and that ate up the rear diff gears. Pic of the cracked support below. You cant see it in the picture but the bolt that is by the crack which should be at 3 and 9 oclock now is at 5 and 10 oclock
Tony, sorry to hear about your misfortune .. Hope you gettin that Chally ass! Good luck at the dealer ... I know a good dealer called Westbury!
like I said on LX.....you broke an axle. The bracket you have circled is for the lower control arm,not the diff.
I use Star Dodge had way too many disasters before AJ started working there to bring it to Westbury, besides if the old service manager is there he will go running for his life, when I had the Jeep I threatened to rip his head off his shoulders. You were right Erik I snapped a half shaft WOOHOO, probably the BEST news I could have gotten. Add me to the list and ill take a pic of it to post up too!
Im just happy it was ONLY the halfshaft, pheeeew!! BTW the new one had a made in Germany sticker on it. Hmmm Mercedes part?
