I have a question. What mods should I stay away from? I want a fast but safe car. From my last post I wrote I have a pretty good idea about the changes to do. I guess my question is what is the shelf life of these engines? Thanks guys......kevin

I would say around 280-300hp. What do you think?

Just get a diablo, exhaust, wideband and a FM or AGP wastegate. Diablo is really nice tuner and ppl have seen excellent results after getting the car tuned.

That is exactly the mods I was thinking. I would be good with these upgrades? When should I be looking at a rebuild by the way?

Yea you will be safe with those mods. Make sure to always eye your AFRs. Might be a good idea to get a walbro 255 pump. 400hp and over is when you need to start watching the bottom end.

Thank you for the insight. This forum is very informative.

One more thing. What kind of power would be needed to beat my Charger Srt-8?

Well my wife was driving my Srt-8 one day and I was keeping up. I raced a Srt-4 years ago that had some mods and he could just bearly keep up. We ran from 60 to 140ish. We were also running at about 2600ft elev. Should the Neon beat the Charger?

Its going to cool the air down some which will help but over 300hp is where you start to see the stocker start to heatsoak.

It's really hard to say when u need a rebuild there's many with 100k plus miles on the stock bottom end and pushing some power it all depends on the tune and how it was taking care of

I got the car from an old lady who drove everyday to work(120mi each way). Real good maintenance records so I feel confident about the bottom end. I will go conservitive till the engine rebuild. Thanks........ Kevin

What about Stage 3? I would think that reliability issue would be as good as you will get, being that the kit comes from Dodge. And if I remember correclty Stage 3 should put you in the 315whp range, up to 350-ish on HOM.

very safe route as long as you stick to only that power level out of the s3.

As with anything you can push it a bit too far LOL but I have seen S3s up to 400whp being VERY reliable.

But if you are going budget route:
    Exhaust
    Intake
    WGA (AGP or FM)
    Hard pipes
Give DCR your turbo for a little loven

Instead of an upgraded wga like I recommended in your other thread I would stick to the stock wga. Reason I say this I am currently testing the N2MB racing EBC (electronic boost controller). Keep your eye on this as they will be releasing it soon for stock turbo and s3 turbo SRT-4's. Its boost by gear. So you set how much boost you want in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th. Whatever you set is the target and it will try to stay within target. I have traction in all gears. I can sit at a light... slam the gas pedal to the ground and just take off. No spinning of tires... no peeling out. No feathering the clutch, no worrying about keeping the car on the ground and so fourth. I will be getting their wot box with 2-step soon to see how it does with their EBC.

Videos of testing can be seen on youtube.com

As far as BFMIC, get one. The stocker heatsoaks just after (1) pull or (1) hard run.

At one point a friend of mine and I had the same mods but he had a bfmic and I still had the stocker. First run we were neck in neck. I would shift he'd inch, he would shift and I would inch. The second run, he got about a car and a half out thanks to the stocker heatsoaking. So a BFMIC is a good investment.

A bigger front mount should always be one of the necessary mods if you're pushing more power.

    I love the DSP Predator

70k miles is fine to start modding. I guess to make certain you can do a compression test. I just did one on a buddy's SRT that has had a .50 trim on it for over 25k miles and the car has about 84k miles and it hit 175 across all cylinders. In disbelief I ran a leakdown test and it passed with flying colors again.

    These are stout motors.
