    Just out of curiosity...

Due to a dead end degree I currently have and paying on student loans with nothing to show fourth... I decided to go back to school and start off with EMT training. Hoping to start school in May.

Tomorrow I have to go to a local Fire Department to do the BLS (Basic Life Support) Class. Its from 8am-2pm. The class is a requirement before I can enroll into the EMT training through the school. So I'm really hoping I learn a lot and PASS the exam at the end.

My mom is a RN (Registered Nurse) and will also be taking the class tomorrow to keep up-to-date with her license. Lucky for me, the Veteran's Hospital she works in had the BLS for Healthcare Providers instruction manual in the library so I've been studying. Actually studying as I'm typing this lol.

I've been CPR certified before but its been ages and I never renewed my license. Although I don't think that license is the same as this because from what I was told their is two different CPR courses, basic and then on the professional standpoint (BLS).

From EMT I can branch off (excel) to Paramedic or Firefighter. So far I'm looking forward into becoming a Paramedic but its going to be one mile stone at a time.

Never in a million years did I think I would pursue any route in the medical field. Due to the economy, healthcare caught my interest and seems more securing then any other work related field out there and more promising IMO.

I just hope I made the right choice because the student loans I'm paying on now just really irrate me on the fact that I'm paying for a degree I can't even get a job in!

Any advice, words of wisdom, etc. from EMT/Paramedic/Firefighter on here I greatly would appreciate it!

i did emt, now im a last semester medic. its fun, you learn allot and it takes up a crap load of your free time. youll find out real quick if its for you when you do your ride times and clinicals.

too bad its so freaking hard t find a fire/medic job in south florida and being just a paramedic doesnt pay squat. ive decided once i finish medic school in may ill be switching my major to psychology and go into law enforcement.

feel free to email me if you have any questions, if i can answer them or help you to learn something you are having a hard time understanding i will be than happy to do so.

    Figs,

I am the new Assistant Chief with the Immokalee Fire Dept, but I was the Captain of training for the last 4 years with a neighboring department. I also teach at the fire academy here in Naples. Where are you taking your EMT at? Fortunately for you, you live close to one of the best fire, police, anti-terror schools in the south-east. That is a shameless plug for St. Pete College. I completed my A.S. in Fire Science there.

When you take your BLS class, ask them about ride-a-longs and if they will allow you to stay for a full 24 hour shift. I have always recommended these for prospective firefighters. Go on what is normally thier busiest day of the week (probably a week day) and you get to see what a firefighter does for 24 hours. No offence to some of my brothers, but it's not just washing the truck and holding down a recliner!

[email protected] is my email, contact me anytime. I will be happy to help you out in any way I can. How close are you to Palm Harbor? I know the Chief there (I think everybody knows Chief Angle).

    Good luck with EMT!

What is your current degree in?

Anthony, thanks for feedback and information and also extending a hand to help me with anything you may be able to help me with along the journey truly appreciate it.

I was going to go into Law Enforcement but my wife didn't want me to or approve of it lol so I chose the next best route :).

    Scott,

St. Pete College is where I'm am applying to go for. I'm going to apply at the Healthcare Division center that is on 66th St. N. and Park Blvd.

I went to the BLS class this morning and it actually ended early since only half the students showed up. I learned a lot! The instructor was awesome and it helped he worked at one of two fire departments in St. Pete that were the busiest and was able to give us real time things he has experienced over the years and just recently experienced this month. He did mention ride-a-longs while starting the class so I didn't have to ask. Glad he explained it and you mentioned it because I definately want to do that.

Palm Harbor is about a 30 min drive from where I live in St. Pete. I'm close to US19 so it would be a straight shot North.

Thank you for the support and I will be in contact with you by email if I have any questions, concerns, or in need of some help.

My current degree is AS degree Computer Information Web Design.
