    Hello everybody,

I am due for a transmission fluid change/flush. And I want to know if I should do this at the dealership, or can I have it done at a local shop?? If I do take it somewhere else, is there anything I need to let the service techs know that makes the srt8 Transmission Fluid chanage/flush process different from the usual method.

    Thanks for all your help!

P.S. sorry if this subject has been touched on before( I did try to do a search!!)

Its probably best to have the dealer do it, and I'm last guy to take my car to a dealer. To check the transmission fluid level after the flush and fill, you need a special Miller tool and a strarscan to check the temp. No dipstick for us.

Thanks for the reply! Thats what I was thinking too!. I had it done at the dealer. My dealer was having a sale so the price was about the same.

Unfortunately, I thought I would save some money and get my brakes done at my local shop (I called to get a quote!). I drove to the dealer, to pick up the rotors (they price matched), had my transmission serviced, then drove to the local shop. They had everything done in about an hour. Got the bill.....:shok: It was 1/3 more expensive then the dealer. I couldn't believe it! I said that I was just at the dealer, and could of had it done there much cheaper. I told him that I specifically drove here because of the better quoted price! He said that because they had to remove the calipers it cost more. Lesson learned....get a quote in person. Because, even though I did explain that it was an srt-8 on the phone, I don't think it registered with the person on the phone. What upset me the most was that I really liked this place and take my other 2 cars there. What also upset me was the fact that the whole reason I went there was to feel like I wasn't getting ripped off. On a positive note the front manager did give me a coupon for a free oil change. But again I don't know if he realized that it was an srt-8 and that it cost more. If they allow me to get it my Magnum's oil changed with the coupon, then I guess the price will even out.

    Thanks for listening!

P.S. Not only could I have had it done cheaper, but I could of had it done by a "CERTIFIED TECHNICIAN":bigwink:

I'm not a fan of doing the tranny flush I just hope they flushed it before they put in the new filters otherwise they just pushed all the contaminants right into your new filter. I usually just have the pan dropped, replace filter(s) and replace fluid in pan. On a very high mileage vehicle its not bad to do one as long as it hits the torque conv. as well. Either way it's good your doing maintenance on your ride it will definately appreciate it.

I don't know much about this, but I did mention that I heard doing a power flush could be bad. The service manager said that actually after doing a flush they can fit about 4 more extra quarts of fresh tranny fluid. I know that just because he says that it doesn't mean it's true! I am not sure the order they did the flush, but I assume they did whatever the service manual said to do. They always tell me that they do what ever the service manaual says.

I'm sure they did it right and I'm sure your tranny appreciates it alot of times we forget to do these things. It's fun to go fast and buy power adders but preventative maintenance will pay off more in the end.

I figured I would ask this question in this thread because it relates to my story. I am not exactly sure about price disscussion, so I don't know if it can be anwered or not? My question is: What should the typical honest price be to have your brakes and rotors replaced by a mechanic, assuming you supply the brakes and rotors. Because even though the shop was nice to give me a free oil change, I am afraid to go back for other service because I might not be getting an honest price.

Thanks agian for all the great help!

Figure about $90/hour labor (going rate around here). Pad swaps are simple, maybe 1.5 hours for all four corners. Removing and reinstalling rotors is more complicated, maybe 3-4 hours to do all four corners

Here's a question for you. Do you run any additives and what synthetic oil are you running in the tranny? We use MOTORKOTE in the trucks.I have actually put it in the tranny, diffs and front hubs.I have not checked the service manual on the mileage as per when it should be done but right now i put 12oz in the charger when i did my first oil change.I also use royal purple. Each to there own but there website is intersting. www.MOTOR-KOTE.com.Just curious to see what others like to use.

Thanks for the info. I guess their price was honest, that's good to know!

I don't add any addatives. I have been wondering if their are any fuel addatives/fuel injector cleaners that are safe. But maybe they are just a waste of money! And as far as oil/fluids go, I use whatever the dealership uses. I know it's mobil synthetic 0w40 for the engine. I am sure there are much better people on this forum to answer these questions though.
