Burnout help please!!

    I ran at Infineon dragstrip today. Decent weather and good traction. Best run was 12.12@115 MPH. I tried a newly tweaked CMR tune today and during my burnout hit limp mode 7 out of 8 times. Normally I just apply the brake and stomp on the gas and shift to 2nd near 6000 rpm. Today the engine revved so fast that even when I tried to shift to 2nd near 5000 rpm it was too late and it shot up to 7000 (bang ... limp mode).

    Should I feather the throttle and bring it up to 6000 rpms slowly or just shift to 2nd almost instantly? I'm running M/T street ETs on 17" Cobra rims. Suggestions? I want to launch harder but can't without a good burnout.

    Good question Jeff...I'm in the same boat. My 60' was only 1.83-1.84 on the same DR's...I know we should ensure both wheels are spinning but I have a hell of time doing it with no spotter.

    There were some really good answers at lxforums when I posted there. I was getting 1.80-1.81 60' times but I know I can push it better by revving highter before launch if I'm confident that my burnout heated up the tires enough.

    The main suggestions were:

    1) set rev limiter at shift point or just above so it hits rev limiter and doesn't go into limp mode.

    2) shift to second at 4000 rpm so it has time to shift before winding up to 6500.

    3) feather the thottle around 5-6 grand.

    4) start burnout in second gear

    I'll play around with these this weekend at Sacramento if there is no rain.

    How would a line lock keep me from over-revving and hitting limp mode?

    It will get your foot off the brake pedal which is probably what's sending the error message(s) to the PCM putting it into limp mode and/or kicking in the ABS at the rear calipers which might cause the over-revving.

    It certainly won't hurt (well, the tires might scream a little. LOL).
    Plus, you won't need a spotter because during your testing away from the track you've already confirmed that both wheels are cooking.
