I checked my catch can recently after about four months of driving and was surprised to see that it was about 3/4 full of oil. The oil was clean and there was no gunk or debris in the catch can. I was just surprised to see that much oil. My oil had recently been changed at the dealer. Does this seem typical? Indicative of a dealer overfill? Or some other problem? The MSRT is running as smooth as ever.
Four months? What does that equate to miles? I have done many round trips from ABQ to SoCal since adding the catch can and in the 1800 mile round trip, my catch can was 1/4+ full. So this seems to be normal with no ill effects. Also, it is highly recommended that you DO NOT reuse the oil from the catch can. There have been some who have found foreign material (shavings from the CC filter) at the bottom of the CC....
I've been measuring for a long time now. I consistently catch about 10ml per 500 miles. You should not see any particles or gunk. This should all be the result of condensed oil vapors (or maybe some teeny tiny microscopic droplets). The main function of the PCV is to vent gasses. You should expect what you catch to look a lot cleaner (particulate wise) than what's in the oil pan. Just for kicks I think I'm going to send a sample to Blackstone labs for analysis.
IDK Greg, I just had to say what a great thread title it is! LOL!!!!! (listen to Quick, he knows all)
Appears normal to me and what I see in mine. I would suggest you check it more frequently so its not as full when you take it off the car, especially if you have to tilt the can slightly to take off the car.
Great title!!! I clean out my catch can at every oil change and find that it consistently is 1/2 full. I do a full synthetic change every 3K miles with 0W/40 Mobil 1.
