I hope everyone can chime in on this one. I pulled up a quote by someone on the chargerforums.com board and this is what was stated about the new BWOODY VELOCITY PLUS SHORT RAM INTAKE. I sent Mike an email at BWOODY so hopefully he will respond. Here is the quote about the product: moving the iat isnt a smart idea . the pcm directs fuel based on ambiant air temp. if you put the sensor where it reads 70 degrees but at the throttle it actually has 75 degrees then all you are doing is telling the vehicle to dump more fuel then what it needs, thus wasting gas mileage. You want the right amount of fuel for the right tempature thats at the throttle body. Tricking sensors that are put their to do a job is normally a dumb thing to do. just an opinion. Does anyone have any thoughts on this.............. due to I would like to order this product. Is this something that will do harm to the engine ? Need all opinions !!!
if i am not mistaken, the ait sensor also will effect timing as well. if ait reads colder air, the pcm thus increases fuel richment and adjusts timing accordingly. the idea is to make the pcm think the car is cooler than it actually is. take into consideration also running a cooler t-stat so operating temps are also lower than "normal" so the pcm does not have conflicting info. i am not an expert on this, but i am pretty sure this is the leighmans way it works. so no, not necessarily a bad thing at all of you have all the other parameters in order.
The IAT does effect timing!.. I never understood why people were moving the IAT. I would want my PCM to know the actual temp of the air entering the throttle body. The object here is to HAVE colder air NOT LIE about it. I mean if you want your IAT to be cooler because you THINK it is going to help then move it into the passenger compartment. Or I am sure you can probably trick the IAT into always saying a certain temp like 80 F, with a few resistors. It appears that the IAT is an "RTD" (Resistance Temperature Detector) which calculates temp based on a device that changes resistance based on temp.
+1...IMO make the air cooler, don't trick the computer....Water/Meth will do that nicely! I have seen where some intakes move the IAT, so there is probably soemthing to it, but at the day I think cooler air is always better regardless where teh IAT is.
Funny we moved the Jeeps iat sensor 19 inches down stream and our intake makes more power than anyone elses on the market, also out of all the SRT-8's the Jeep get the worst gas milage and we've had reports back of as much as a 2 mpg gain in fuel economy, The results speak for themselves.
Guys per Johan at Diablo this past friday. The IAT DOES effect timing.SHoot him a message I know he will agree..How do I know this???He saw a steel braided line from onr of our catch cans resting against the IAT.He stated you might want to get that off of there because the heat from the steel braided line will heat up the IAT and the car will pull timing.Just thought I would share.BTW He was also impressed with my CAI I just pruchased from Bwoody. He stated that alot had to do with the placement of the IATsensor. The only thing he said might help is if it wasnt made out od metal.Just thought I would share..
I believe I have "heard" that it was 1 deg of timing per 10 deg F of IAT. Regretably....I don't remember the base temp. Probably somewhere around 90-100 deg F.
