just had my new RDP street/strip 2800 stall convertor put in yesterday!!! HOLY CRAP!! what a difference!!! i hated how the car never seemed to drive right under part thottle and how the tc kinda bounced between lock and unlock..... with the rdp unit, the car pulls soooooo much harder, shifts more solidly, and will roast the crap out of the tire into second gear!!! one of my chief complaints about my car was spinning the tires hard in first, only to have it shift early and bog down in second. not any more!!! woo-hoo!!! for anyone who is thinking about doing a torque convertor, i STRONGLY recommend the rdp unit!!! the unit is totally streetable, but it now allows me to launch the car much better/harder than with the stock convertor!! i have no chattering, vibrations, or anything else! also, not only was steve very helpful, but he had the unit to me exactly when he promised!!! he has also be "johnny on the spot" when it comes to answering my many questions and emails!!! thanks a ton steve, you were absolutely right....... it has made a WOOOOORLD of difference in my cars behavior!!!
Congrats Chris....the TQ convertor I put in my former SRT8 made a world of difference...and it was probably no where near as good as the one you have now...........but after I installed it I thought if there was only one mod to do this would be it....smokin tires was easy...and it cured that 2nd gear bog you mentioned..
yeah larry, this is one mod i would highly recommend to all srt owners!!! gas mileage will suffer a bit i am sure, but man the car drives soooooo much better!!!!
Sounds great Chris!!! Can you actually launch your car alot harder and get traction with the new TC. I know if I give it too much gas out of the hole I'll spin the tires alot easier with the higher stall TC.
steve - with the wider tires in the rear, i am able to get the car to launch out of the hole after stalling it up, by only slightly having to slow roll and feather the gas pedal. if i just mash down the gas pedal, i just spin the crap out of the tires!!! lol
I think most of my traction problems with my car Chris is that I just have a HEAVY right foot!!!!!!!!!!!!! I end-up mashing the pedal alittle too hard when I'm trying to launch it. I think I had an easier time launching my 6-spd Firehawk with 4.10's in it!LOL
I think in a year or so when I do my mods, I'll be getting one of these. Chris-had you ever driven an LX with a TQ prior to buying one? That's one thing I want to do before I get one.
Unfortunately we don't have a drag strip or road course within a few hours of Tijuana North...a.k.a "Eastlake". I'm really just setting the car up as a great spirited around town driver that handles well in the mountains. Most tend to talk about the good drive ability characteristics associated with the TQ. And for as much as Chris takes his car to the drag strip...that means something! LOL
I never really pushed my former 8 thru the twisties after the TQC install but I dont think it would have helped as far as handling...rather would think it would hinder accelling out of a curve.......but was great for launching...
Well it really has no impact as far as stall on the road course. Fact is most of the TC will be ful lock up 100% of the time because of the rpm band your running in "which" if your going for it will always be above 4K.
I really dont know if it helps or hurts on the road course...I just remember that it felt somewhat like slipping the clutch which I would think would not work well when you want strong pull coming out of a turn......but again I am just assuming...may be the hi-stall TQC would be great on the twisties where Rick likes to be..:hmm:
I think you may have had a VERY LOOSE TC. I had one that didn't lock up 100% untill above 5K. That unit never saw the road course. Most 2800 stall units will flash stall around 3200 depending on several factors. And most of the time if your autosticking, you'll keep the rpms way above that.
I was one of the first around the forums to have a hi-stall TQC in a SRT8....I am sure the newer ones perform better plus the tuners/flashes help...but again I am not saying this is a bad mod for the road course because I just dont know....just seems it would be mushy feeling coming out of the turns...but that was my experience with the one I had...
There's some definite truth to this. When I first got my TC installed(pre DynoSteve's tune) the TC wouldn't lockup as quickly and when in 2nd gear in autostick at low rpms it would slip pretty good at moderate throttle. Now with the RDP tune, the TC locks up sooner and is more daily driver friendly in the low rpms at part throttle.
Congrats mate. Steve and my self are wrapped that it works well for you. Just need a few sets of tyres now mate. Cheers Jason
oh yeah!!!!! lol my tires might not be, but i am smiling!!!! now that i have done...... i would agree!!! drives like a different car!!! rick - no, i had not driven a srt with a 2800 stall tc before. i was a bit nervous, but i had confidence in the rdp unit after several e mails and pm's with dynosteve!!! he really knows his shit!!!! now i am just waiting for him to send me back my tune. i did some logs with the new tc in so he could tweak things as needed. it has been a great experience working with steve and rdp!!!!! actually it would work just fine imo. hey turd, my car has seen more passes down an OFFICIAL 1320 track than yours!!!! i even still have the rubber in the fender wells to prove it!!! lol exactly!!!!! you are sooooooo smart cam!!! lol :worthy: at high rpms, it will be locked and a much more solid feel to the car imo. at least thats how mine feels when auto sticking it around and keeping the revs up! get one..... you will not be sorry......gas mileagekinda takes a hit, but over all it makes a nice difference in how the car drives. i also did the merc fluid when they filled the tranny and that got rid of all the shuddering i had when shifting between gears, ie forward to reverse and vice versa. loving this thing jason!!!! now just get steve off of the beaches and send me my revised tune!!! hahahahahahahaa RDP FTW!!!!!!
