Hope yall are catching this show tonight (Sat 9pm) as they REALLY road test the Challenger. It is pretty good. 170 MPH run with drag racer Gary Selzey. Drive with Jay Leno. Road course with the '08 and a black '09 wih the 6 speed and Kyle Petty behind the wheel. They do driving with and without ESP and really get squirrelly. Good show for the Chally. El Mirage dry lake bed in CA near Barstow is where they do the top speed run. Can normal citizens sneek onto this lake bed? Does anybody know? I would love to go there to test my cars top speed without a cop to worry about.
SCTA (Southern California Timing Associaton) has timimg events there. There is one going on Oct. 26th. Maybe I will drive over and check it out. http://www.scta-bni.org/SCTA-NewWeb/El_Mirage_Main.html Crap... I just noticed the rules...if you run over 160 you have to have a roll bar. Maybe I could get away with it 1st time.....lol. I mean... what..... are they going to run me down? It gets worse..I will be a "Rookie Drive" and will be limited to 150mph. However the timed race will be on a 1.3 mile course. This seems like the Texas mile. Here are the rules and procedures. http://www.scta-bni.org/SCTA-NewWeb/El%20Mirage/ELM%2008/El%20Mirage%20Procedures%2008%20.final.pdf
NetNathen is correct but it does get better. You have to be a member of the SCTA or pay the guest price. you have to have a race seat, arm restraints, fire system and a roll cage to run. The car needs to pass inspection, You need a full fire suit w/gloves and shoes. You also need an approved helmet and you need to go through the Rookie orientation. You cannot sneak out to El Mirage any more the BLM now charges admission and to think about running your car on the bed (when other people are on the bed) well thats a big no no.
