    BUG: Back Up Gun

Well, at least I'm considering this:

    Smith and Wesson 340PD:
Smith & Wesson combined a Scandium alloy frame with a Titanium cylinder to build the strongest and lightest weight .357 Magnum revolver made. The result...maximum power in a small, lightweight, easy-to-carry package. Scandium alloy is used for small, medium and large frame revolvers. Smith & Wesson's lightest and strongest revolvers deliver dependable power every time.

After my latest work trip, I've decided I need a light weight back up and/or off duty weapon, and this pocket cannon may be the ticket. Impossible to jam, can fire from your pocket, very light, and packs .357 Magnum power.

Right now, I carry a Glock 26 as my primary backup, but it requires a 'real' holster and won't fit in your pocket for casual off duty wear.

A teeny tiny, super light weight, snub nosed .357 magnum! You're going to have to be within about 3 feet to hit anything you're aiming at... I suppose you don't have to actually shoot them, they'll just pass out from the noise.

so Momo.. whats that in your pocket??? your back up piece or are you just thinking about the EQ??? Unless you put in your rear pocket than it looks like you just took a dump in drawers...

If you are going to carry a back up piece carry it with a holster so it can stay secure... just what I used to love running into is a COP bar with everyone's back piece flying around on the floor..

better yet use better judgment.. the only time you need a back up is in dire circumstances... especially in today's society when everyone is sue happy..

    Nice looking gun.

I carried one of those little Freedom Arms 5 shot .22 magnum revolvers in my pocket. They are absolutely tiny. Just don't use it for shooting clay pigeons.

jason, pardon my ignorance, but why the need for a back up gun???? would this also be carried, along with the primary fire arm???? i am not a gun person, actually very anti-nra since i was shot (do not flame me, just my view...), nor am i leo, but i am cuious if it is S.O.P to carry a back up.

btw, those little buggers are expensive!!!! lol

Standard issue is usually really large, and heavy. If you don't have your pants on most of the time you need something you can carry in your sock.

I had a really nice S&W .38 3" on Adak in the Aluetian Islands. Almost traded for a Colt python .357 M. I was only 20 when I was transfered, and had to sell it because you had to be 21 to keep it.

Amazing. You could fight and die in the armed services, but you couldn't drink, own a firearm, or vote. Now that was f**ked up.

I don`t see anything wrong with your choice, but if they get that close, i would be in knife mode. Year after year the stats from FBI state that 95% of fatal gunfights happen within 5-7 feet....no need for long range weapons for personal defense, cus your allready very close and personal. I carry one gun with me on a daily basis and a microtech auto tanto combat model!

    Ok...

Of course I'd carry it in a holster! But because it is so light and relatively small, the types of holsters and the positions and places you can carry a small weapon such as this increases... More options! Plus when "off duty" (misnomer as Ryan and I are technically on call 24-7) you can stuff this puppy into your shorts pocket and not even know it's there.

As for the knife hand comment, Rambo, see above.

Backup guns are SOP for most Leo.

The great thing about a 357 is that you can also shoot 38 specials from it!!! So, at quals, I'd use the 38 rounds and duty carry 357 for the proverbial "oh shit" situation. Thus hitting a target, for example, at 25 yards with that weapon won't be an issue.

Chris, sorry to hear of your misfortune. If you care to elaborate, please do.

jason - 1991, i was a senior in college. just met my future ex-wife. i was riding my buddies gsxr750 with my girl. my buddy (who owned the bike) was driving his 1963 ragtop bug. it is early fall, we eat at a local outside burger place and then decide to go back and drop off the bike then go out. my girl gets in the bug with my buddy, and i am on the bike. we leave the burger joint on a main street. we turn off of the street into a residential area. stop at a three way stop. i roll up on my buddies car and start hitting the rear bumper with the front tire of the bike. suddenly i notice in my mirror a car coming up on my left. i first think " i guess he wants to make the left and not wait for us to move...."

as i look to my left, keep in mind i am right on my buddies car with the bike, i realize that the car is about a foot away from me and stops. as i look up, i have a sawed off shot gun about 8" from my face. i have no helmet on (pre helmet laws in cali)....... the guy says "don't be stupid white boy and just get off the bike....."

then things went into slow motion...... i feel the door hit me in the left knee, he is so close he can't get out of the car. the door had a frame around the window, so he dropped the gun in order to try and get out of the car. i look up and my girl is screaming at my buddy, he rolls forward, i see an opening now and no gun in my face. i was fortunate to have the bike in gear (remember, i was fucking around and bumping my buddies car with the front tire of the bike), so i launch the bike as i did when i was racing it, get the bike on one wheel and then WHAM!!!!! i felt like my back exploded!!!!! i just kept riding, my adrenaline was pumping something fierce. i get back to my house, collapse on the floor and did not move!!! a few minutes later, my friend and girl show up, took me to the er room, and the docs fixed me up.

as my buddy told me later, the guy stood up out of the car, and shot over the top of his open ragtop in his bug. he said it was so loud, that the stereo actually dimmed and his ears felt like they exploded!! ever since then, i have stayed far away from any type of gun and just do not see the interest in them at all.

Fucking SCUMBAGS......Sorry that happened to you bro! I can deff understand that you are gun shy, but you need one....evrybody does for self/home defense!!! What do you guy`s think is gonna happen in this country when a suitcase nuke goes off or a dirty bomb......MARSHALL LAW!!! If any of these scenarios every play out you will need weapons just to keep luters out of your house or simply to protect yourself and loved ones. I hate to say this, but i am 33 and i`m almost certain that i will see this happen one day. If 911 was possible, then i don`t under estimate their capabilities AT ALL! Terrorist that is, and osama has got to have sumthing else brewing.....he`s been underground to long!

That is a pretty intense pistol- alot of power but no accuracy- thats solely for man-killing purposes.
And Chris, that is one intense story- in a situation like that, you def. got your adrenaline- glad you walked away safely.

I hate people that dont respect others that have nice toys such as a car or a bike and feel they can just take it from you because they want it- it really infuriates me to read stories like yours and then realize there are people like this walking our streets of the USA-
...I caught someone a few years ago as I was walking out to my car with my friends trying to jimmy the lock on my 99- I ran up behind him, tackled him and beat the cr*p out of him- it took 2 of my friends to pull me off of him after I got gone beating his head into the pavement- the cops came and looked at what I had done to the kid (he was smaller than me but I didnt care- it was my car) and wanted to take me in for aggrivated assault- I then dropped my uncles name (detective for NYC DEA) and they let me go home (there was no damage done to teh car thank god. I learned that unless you have an in somewhere, you really cant protect yourself without getting in somekind of trouble or looked at funny. OK im done venting.
