With the new halfshafts 'waiting' to be purchased, I have been looking closely at rim and tire choices for the track. Originally I was going to run stock Charger wheels (bought an extra 2 rims to be widened eventually) and Nitto555r's in a 275. After reading how much they have to be heated up and the lack of positive reviews, I'm thinking the 305's are mandatory. I think it was Ujokin2 (whose now a member here) who said the 305's work better in his experience. This would mean having to widen the wheels beforehand and than messing with clearance issues which I can see would drive me bonkers. I've just liked the idea that the car would look stock AND good hahaha. I think many of the wheels out there look like ass, so having said that... a) What do you think are the best DR's for traction on an LX? b) What rim type and diameter? c) Which look the best? I don't mind the look of JMatt's...anyone know what these are and where to get me some?
If you are going to go an 18" Rim for the DR's, the go with the Mickey Thompson DR's. The Nitto's are only good for the first 10 or so passes.
Okay since you mention me LOL I will give you my 2 cents wither you like it or not LOL 1. First you have to get a spacer if you go any bigger the 275 on the rears 2. Second the 305/35/20 WILL FIT on the 20x9 Stock SRT8 RIMs Yes they ballon a "little" it is not that bad. 3. NITTO's REQUIRE a lot of HEATING to Stick.... BAD part about heating is the BURNOUT tend to be longer (5-6 secs) BAD part about longer BURNOUTs is of course you lose more rubber. BAD part is IF you don't have a quaife is you tend to do alot of ONE wheel burnouts. One wheel burn outs also make it bad for launching. I am on my second set of NITTOS as I wore the 275 to less then 1/2 of tread in less then 4,000 miles and about 20+ trips down the track. 4. On a hot day or night at the track they SUCK you will spin yes you will be able to do 1.8-20 launches but heck you got drag radials so you expect better. As 1BAD4DR said the I got great results on my first 10 or so passes and I was getting 1.7-1.8 60's 5. I love the idea of driving to the track and not having to change the the tires. So for now I will stick to these. BUT I am picking up a set of custom 17 X 9.5 with Hoosier slicks for when it is alot cooler. Hopefully sometime in the near future M/T or Hoosier or any other who tire company who makes drag radials will have one that will fit the 20's we have. Can't you tell I have a love hate relationship with the NITTO's ....LOL PS hey 1BAD4DR I am driving all the way to the shindig and to the track with these NITTO's
Thanks for the honest reviews fellas! I hate the idea of swapping rims out at the track too...I think I may have to get some 18's somewhere. Last I checked, 402 motoring had some deals....John, you didn't like the Voxx wheels? Was that you that had them before? Any issues?
This is what I am going to try next: 17 x 9 aftermarket Cobra R wheels and Hoosier 275/40 drag radials. No spacer is needed. I am just guessing but it looks like it would be close to needing a spacer even if I just went to 17 x 9.5 wheels. I have both but don't have the tires mounted yet because I am painting the wheels black. The aftermarket wheels fit fine as the hub diameter seems to be about 1-2mm bigger than our hub. If you went with OEM Cobra R wheels, you would probably have to hone out the wheel about 1mm to make them fit over our hub. Mickey Thompson also makes 274/40/17 in their ET Street drag radial. I have the 20" Nitto DRs and I do not like them. I probably did not heat them enough and I did use them on a very hot day, but I get better 60' times with the Goodyear F1s. It is nice to be able to drive to the track with the Nittos on the car but I would only do that if I were going the the local track anyway.
If your going to spend the money and have to switch rimsany ways u watn to go toa 17 so you can run the et streets or the hoosiers. Why go to a 18 when you can get nittos on ur stock 20's. IMO
I drove around on my 17's and et streets for 2 weeks. not a problem. Just dont go over 85 for to long and your fine.
What is too long...as you know we are hitting 117-120 mph in the 1/4 LOL I just can't see driving around town with 20 inch wheels up forward and leaving 17 in the back.... kinda looks silly.
yea it did look funny what it gots peoples attention. At 85 the tires would start to sway its a smaller ply side wall.
Good point there. The ET Streets would be OK to drive to track with. Might look a little funny but oh well.
Yup I drove 100 miles to sac more than once on the 18's wasnt bad at all when I drove to infinion 60miles I had to keep it under 80

haha That is AWESOME. Yea, I have the 305/45/18 Nitto's as well. They are mounted to *cough cough* Cobra rims. No spacers needed.
